i'm too lazy to wait till the 10th but if anyone knows will the dmv want to do an inspection on my bike before its on the road or could i get it registered not for the road and deal with it later. i tore the bike down plan on putting it back together but not sure on what needs to be there for road legal. it hasn't been registered since 06.

I have registered several bikes in California and they have never inspected it or anything. They just say, gimme money... Good, here's your registration.

Where are you in California?

long beach. i figured that here california doesn't really trip on their vehicles hahaha i'll see how things go on friday.

I'm right smack dabbed in the middle of you guys. I'm from the San Fernando Valley. When I get my bike up and running along with it being registered, that'd be sick if we can get a California Cafe Crew and race from one Starbucks to another LOL.

A friend of mine found an old bike on some acreage his Dad owned in Madera County, he didn't want to bother with the reg so he gave it to me. I took it to the DMV with nothing but a hand written note from my friend to me that it was a gift (which shouldn't matter because he wasn't the registered owner). The DMV told me it was a stolen bike, but it had been stolen 6 years ago and in California the statute of limitations is only 3 years for a stolen motorcycle. But since it was now "recovered" I would have to have the CHP inspect it -- which I did.
The CHP inspection consisted of them checking to make sure the neck hadn't been cut off and re-welded and that the VIN was not scratched off. They also compared the engine's ID number to the bike's VIN and they matched and there was no further investigation.
The CHP signed the xyz-123 form I needed to take back to the DMV and received new plates and tags. I then rode the bike until selling it for rent money.

If you dont have a title for it in hand, They may want you to do a CHP VIN inspection before you get a new title and registration

all of my experiences (there have been many) have been if its out of the system completley chp has to see it, if it might be a dirt bike that fell out of reg. (dual sport) the chp will have to see it. if you walk in with a cluster fuck of hand written "transfer of ownership" type paper work the chp might want to see it. other than that your lookin at some hefty back reg. which you might be able to scam your way through with a non-op reg.
my cb hadnt been reg'd since 06 also, i walked in to handle it in aug. the lady (god bless her) told me i could pay the 300 something to get my tags or pay 65 to have it put on non-op, come back in a few months and pay another 70 to get the tags. i dont know how the fuck it worked but it did ???.... good luck, and if your dmv is anything like they are in the bay bring 2 good books... one is never enough!

Yeah I have a bike that was stolen, and then left on the side of the road up in Sacramento. CHP recovered it and gave it back to the owner, which he then non-oped because the thief laid it down and it sat for a long time. He got it back up and running and decided to take a spin at which point he got a ticket.

A word of advice... CHP doesn't take lightly to registration scams... if you non op a bike and do decide to take it out for a spin, don't get a ticket doing 90 in a school zone with a no baffle 4-1 pipe.

Anyway the owner of the bike tried plead with the judge and convince them it was the first time he rode the bike since it had been non oped... they didn't buy it.

So the state of California wast $600+ in bag registrations and penalties... Needless to say he pretty much gave me the bike which was originally going to be used for parts but I have a new frame so everything is getting swapped over.

Oh An I am up a ways in the Santa Barbara area. See the problem is California is so huge that we are all spread out pretty thin on this coast, but we should try to get some meets together, hell I would drive down to meet up and do a ride like topenga canyon, or even making it longer down into SD... There are tons of great roads all along PCH and out in the desert. Just a thought.

Should have known that as I had to register a lein sale, and it cost me $300 even, and the bike wasn't running.

BTW, no inspection was needed. which is handy because the CHP inspection is like 20 mi away and it would have to come and go on a trailer, and I don't even own a truck.

Still gotta register mine, bought it a few weeks ago I guess the best way to go here in LA would be to make an appointment huh?
