I am relocating the battery under the hump. My question is, should I go out and buy a longer grounding cable or can I just ground the battery to a different location, like the passenger pegs or shocks. I know a new cable is only a couple bucks, but when money is tight all other avenues must be researched.
Any device (turnsignal, lamp, neutral indicator, etc...) that is mounted in a plastic housing will need to have a separate ground wire connected. You can just connect a green wire anywhere on the frame after connecting the main ground (or use a main ground strap with a skinny extra wire) and run it inside the harness and ground those items to it and life will be good.
The frame is the main ground plane though but you haven't lived till you've had missing ground problems on auxillary devices.
Yup - I have a couple of places I ground to the frame - one up front for lights etc. to ground to, and one in the back for the battery and lights at the back to ground to. No need to run everything to a single ground connection or have big cables running from the battery under the seat to your engine.
