Removing Suspension

Hi everyone,

Firstly I want to thank the whole forum for all the useful information eveyone has put on here, its been so helpfull especially for a first timer like myself.

My question is related to the Suspension on a Honda CB350. My intention is drop the back end of the bike without having to chop and weld a hard tail onto the frame. I was planning on lowering it by removing the original suspension at the rear and replacing it with steel bars, which would make the back end rigid without the need for welding.

Can someone recommend a suitable steel size (in metric measurement) or point me in the direction of a post in this forum where someone has done this?

Thanks in advance

Steel size for what? The hard struts? It would need to fit between the clevis on the swingarm and as thick as the eye on top of the current shock. So pretty much the same size as the shocks now.

The body of the strut could be as thick as the frame - especially if its a solid bar (which it should be btw)

Thanks,

yes I want to replace my current suspension with a fixed steel brace. that good to know as I dont know anything about metal strengths. I just want it to be strong enough to support my weight (80kg) and stress from assiciated riding. Thanks for the responce. So pretty much try and match the thickness of the frame in a solid bar.

Yep. Where are you from? Just curious.

If you search online for "hardtail struts" im sure somebody makes them. Get a good idea of what others look like at least.

Personally, i would make them TOO thick.

Thanks again, I'm from Melbourne Australia. So what I plan on doing would be completely against the road rules here (unless you pay for an engineering certificate), thats why I want the option of putting the original suspension back on if I ever get caught :)

Whatever you do - don't throw away your current shocks.

Putting struts on a bike on Aussie roads will have your kidneys screaming for you to put the shocks back on in about 30 minutes..... ;D

I'd like to try and find some shorter suspension that might do the trick (as an alternative) but I'm struggleing everything is for harleys. I've found Ikon suspension they are in Melbourne but I'm waiting to hear back form them.

Have a look on US eBay. I got a pair for my GS shipped from these guys for under $120 AUD:

They may not have exactly what you are after, but there's bound to be other suppliers out there who will ship to Oz.....and the AUD is still strong ;)

I didn't even think of ebay, thanks there is heaps of stuff on there. Weird I get all my other stuff on there and didn't think to look for shocks

thanks

Or check out MikesS.com they have a few options. I have no idea if any will be suitable for your project though. I cannot imagine riding in Melbourne over tram lines etc with a solid rear end.

or proven up in Sydney who make/sell IKON.

Or head over to Vic Wreckers and see what they have that would fit.

Thanks for all the replies from everyone! I now have another question. Now that I have lowered the rear of the bike I need to level out the front.

I relize now that I can't simply loosen the tripple trees and slide the front suspension through the tree (due to the way it was manufactured). Can I simply use the top tree from another CB or do I have to a full front replacment with another model?

I'm hopeing I can just use the top tree from a 360 with my current forks.

Thanks agian
