saddlebags on a cafe racer?

Hey all I know it sounds crazy putting saddlebags on a café bike but has anyone else fitted them? I'm building a small café inspired bike for every day commuting to work. A ruck sack will do for carrying the everyday stuff like a pack lunch and wet gear. But I'd like to use the bike for the occasional holiday as I hate flying. Basically my brother in law lives in France and we fly over every year to stay in a local gite. So I'm thinking my wife and daughter can fly and I can set off the day before on the bike. I only need to carry enough for two days max, water, food, change of clothes, sleeping bag and small tent. Also my old man and his mates head off for a week on their Harleys every year and he'd be glad if I could tag along. A two stroke café might not make a long haul tourer but its an mz so pretty bomb proof. Anyway dad gave me an old set of saddlebags that were lying in the shed. They just buckle to the frame so I fitted them for a laugh. Before the frame gets painted i'll need to weld on some lugs for them. What do you think?

As Darth Vader would say......

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Arent those paniers?

But then I give crap to those Sporty owners who think they have a mini bagger too

I don't see anything wrong with it at all. Especially if you can figure out a way to mount them so that they can be easily removed when not needed. Always nice to be able to carry some things on a bike when needed.

Do it and tell anybody who laughs to go F themselves because they likely don't ride further then starbucks. I made my Cafe 450 able to take bags and used it to do weekend trips and even a week away for work. I got paid mileage and I tell you 45-50 mpg puts more in your pocket then a cage getting 22-25 mpg. I would make the bags easy to put on and take off so you don't have them all the time but when you want them they are quick to use, also makes taking them into a tent etc. at night less of a chore. When I had my 450 it was my only bike so I had a 2-up seat, cafe seat, quick change bags etc so the one bike could do all and fit multiple uses etc. I would prefer to have multiple bikes setup for different purposes but I can't afford that. I currently have 1 GL1000 that is a tourer, commuter, grocery getter and back road bomber and I add and remove items as needed to suit.

Cheers

I have a pair of old Military Police document bags that I throw on my 750 for long trips, they're great for carrying tools, flashlight, zipties, electrical tape, additional fluids, etc. Sometimes I just leave 'em on. I think they look cool and anyone who doesn't think so can suck it.

cheers for the support guys. There are two buckles/straps at the top which attach to the exposed frame under the seat and cowl. And another at the bottom which needs moved to attach round the diagonal frame section. So you just undo the three buckles and the cases lift off!

not quite a cafe but i ride it hard fast and far

and can carry some stuff it great for errands and small parts lol

I run side bags on my Monster, on occasion. I don't see why not.

So cool. If you don't have the bag on the passenger spot, can a passenger get their legs in front of those side bags?

When you need bags, you need bags. I have a set of Joe Rocket bags (not shown) that are really easy on and off. Great for trips. Also do this on occasion:

Nope.

I don't ride 2-up. I did it once and never again.

I'm actually getting some exhaust work done in the next month or two and shaving the rear pegs from the bike.

Haha! Sounds like a story to tell :)

I like the looks of them. I just won a set of used joe rocket soft bags off ebay. My KZ isnt a cafe bike but they will be functional.

Could use a set.... For my next trip I am certainly considering some bags.
