Saying hello for QLD

Hi guys, I am chris from netbikes.com.au, I started a cafe E-list 10 years ago at netbikes but of course and as usual I was before my time so I shut the list down due to little interest in Cafe's, all of a sudden the have become a fashion accessory and business'es are popping up everywhere, go figure.
I have been building cafe bikes since I was 14, now 58. First was a 250 bsa which my dad bought for me, I turned it into a flat tracker and did the local mudflats. In 69 I bought a new Honda S90, carved a hunk out of the seat and put turned down flats on it, in 70 I bought a new CB350, fitted ace bars, cut down seat and fitted Wasal pipes, they were twin per side so it looked like a 4 cylinder, remember this was 2 years before the 350F, guess where Honda got the idea from:). About the same time I bought a Triumph T110 for $75.00, I sold it for $150.00 a few monts later , vibrate, rattle, leak and handle badly. I then bought a 1972 Ducati 450 Silver Shotgun, nothing to do there, it was just right. After that there are a few lost years, just can't remember much till about 1978 when I met my now wife, we moved the Sydney, nice place to visit as they say but we stayed for 3 years anyway, down there I had a few different bikes, R5 Yamaha, K2750 Honda and a H2, bought the H2 back to QLD but sold it just before we got married, bought a new RZ350 in 84 and bacically that was my lot till I bought a Norton 650SS in 89, restored that, Manx cafe style of course, that was a beautifull bike both to look at and ride. In 1995 I swapped it for a new Ducati 400SS at Phil Beaumonts, value $11000 on the road, so that was a good deal for those days. Sold the duke with only 2000K up to finance starting netbikes. Since then about 100 bikes have passed thru my hands but I have kept a few of course and still love building those cafe's. I do work on other's bikes from time to time and there is a running joke around here not to take your bike to chris unless you want clipons and rearsets when you pick it up:) I have a project page at netbikes but it is not really about cafe's, just a few bikes I have saved in recent times. If you want to look go to
http://auction.netbikes.com.au/vjmw.php?page=myprojects

The next step for me is selling netbikes, the wife and I are wanting to travel now so if anyone wants a net business, easy G a week and thats not trying, contact me for a meet, bring your readies:)

Here is a pic of my beloved never seller T20 Suzuki.......... cheers.chris

Gs 550 pistons

Thanks for the link I'm heading to QLS for 5 months work next week and taking my bike with me (in pieces) your resource link will be a great help. Do you have any idea's as to how I could over size my 77 gs 550 pistons. The stock 56mm ones are coming to the point of no return and although a set of rings would be ok It would be great to re-bore. Do you know of any Suzi pistons out there around the thick end of 56.5 to 58? Or anyone into Gs's up your way? Thanks Mark.

Re: Gs 550 pistons

Hi Mark, I really don't know, possibly pistons from a GS650 or maybe a small trail bike or single road bike. You really need to see your current pistons and have measurments?
Don't Suzuki offer oversize for them?, Speak to Lee at Springwood Suzuki, tell him I am working on the bike for a trade discount.
Allbikes at Slacks Creek, 07 38085050, have a lot of dead engines there, you may be able to pick up a good complete top end, also another guy I know but not for publication, E me and I will send you his contact. Anyway whatever you want to do in Brisbane I can likely help......... chris

PS you may get info at http://www.thegsresources.com/

Heya Chris.......nice to hear from someone in my old neck of the woods (sort of). I'm an ex-Qlder myself, moved to Melbourne back in 2000 and have actually fallen in love with down here (not so much with the cold though). I was mainly based on the Gold Coast but had friends and family in Brisbane as well so I travelled between both regularly. Netbikes you say.....cool, I've used the site once or twice myself. :)

It's been great to read about your background and you are right.......things tend to take awhile to become of interest here in Australia especially if it's a niche market but sometimes if you hold in there, it comes around in circles. Yeah, since buying my first 'Cafe-style' bike early last year I've really become immersed into the Cafe Racer 'way of life'. I've always been into bikes on the side as I've also had a few cars too (early Holdens, Falcons and my last pride and joy was my '61 Ford Ranch Wagon that I had to sell to finance the purchase of a house.....damn responsibilites!).

But it's only been in the last 6 years that I've had the chance to get back into bikes again and for the first time, start custom building a few. Started with my wife's '96 250 Rebel and created an early style 'Bobber' out of it, thought it would be cool to do something with it and have a neat little 'round towner'. Then I tackled my '78 CX500 and helped turn that into the Cafe Racer you see today.

Anyway, nice to meet you and maybe we'll all run into each other one day.

Cheers,
ROne

Hi R1, I will be in Vic this Oct for the vjmc rally at Healsvile, hope to be riding my GPZ750 if I ever get it finished.
Yes saw your CX, a good friend here is almost finished building his CX cafe too, they are becoming the flavour of the day. If you want another I have one on evilbay right now, item 280367875055. Yes I bung the odd thing on ebay too.
There is always a bunch of CX riders at the rallys so maybe I will catch up with you there........ cheers.chris

;D hehehe....you're the 2nd person thats thought my username is R1.....hahaha....guess I may need to change that. It's actually just Rone (short for Tyrone) but that's cool, I sometimes just the first two letters as capitals just for the hell of it. ;)

Yeah, I too hope to get along to the VMJC in Oct so hopefully we may catch up there.

As for the CX, yeah...it sort of just happened. I wasn't looking for one but a friend bought it from a guy who started the Cafe process on it but it needed some fine tuning in the aesthetics department. I thought it had potential and my friend just bought himself another bike (Yamaha SR600...also in Cafe Style) and didn't want the CX anymore so I bought it. I must say, personally I think they look quite ugly in original design but they do make quite a nice Cafe, done the right way. And it I hadn't already bought a spare '80 model CX last year (as a spare parts bike...think I paid too much really) I would definately have been interested......unless you want to swap my '80 model for your '78 one? ;D

Catch ya later.

Rone (definately not R1...hehehe)

actually I thought it was as in Ronnie, I just did R1 cause I am lazy:)

Now why would you want to swap your nice cafe CX for my stocko???

chris

Hahaha......oh, o.k.

As for the swap..... ;D No, I certainly don't want to swap my CX Cafe (it too is a '78 model) but I mean't my dirty old 'spare parts' '80 Model CX I bought. I've had it running but she has a bit of corrosion and some minor surface rust and missing a few bits and pieces but I mainly bought it for the engine, drive shaft and other bits I can use if I ever need to. But, I have been toying with the idea of building another CX Cafe with it, this time starting from scratch, a complete rebuild and maybe doing the whole 'polished/chrome' tank and really putting in alot of detail.

*This is my '78 Cafe CX and the spare '80 stocko CX in the background.
