Scammed on Craigslist... I "know" the guy. What can I do?

What a hassle- good luck. There is always a level of trust that you 'bank' on . . . sucks when someone violates that trust.

Get the money for the first three back from the dad and give him the damned bikes back. Now you're only out $800. Then go have a calm face to face with the kid to retrieve that. If he says no... Inform him that you're pressing charges and see if that changes his tune.

Everything about this is shady as fuck. His dad technically sold you items that did not belong to him. Fucked from the get go fella. Get out of all of it with as little damage as possible and go find a bike that is being sold by a non pile of shit.

The son is 25-30. Dad probably 55-60.

It's not just the $800. That was only the start. I then paid for 3 more bikes

Call the 5-0, immediately.
Nope, don't call, go to the station. Take all of the info including pics of the bikes (they may be stolen), make a complete and detailed report. The first person who makes a report is usually considered as truth. You want to beat them to the punch. ;)
They have broken several laws, and if they don't make it right at least you are not an accomplice. (fencing stolen property etc.)

Don't go there without an officer accompanying you.

Sorry that you have to go through this. A handshake and a man's word don't mean what they once did.

Well hopefully "possession is 9/10ths of the law" is real. But this kinda stuff happens everyday. Definitely talk to the sheriff asap, print out whatever correspondence you have for them. Hopefully it all works out

This is exactly what I would do then about a month later go to his house and smash in his face as soon as he comes to the door and go home lol

I went to the station today and the sheriff I spoke to was really cool and nice. He got the whole story down and I had pages of word document with all the info and story as well as all the pictures. He found it funny that all the information the guy gave me was correct down to his social security number and address.

He called his dad, dad said he would ring his sons neck when he sees him and he was really helpful.

The sheriff called the son and the sons story was completely made up and I don't think he realizes that I have every bit of proof I need. He told the cop he would give me all my money back and I give him the first 3 bikes back. He claims the total amount I sent him that I want back includes the money I paid for the first 3 bikes that I have in my possession so he wants those back. His dad sold those to me so they aren't his to get back and the total doesn't include that amount I paid for those.

Say he still disputes the amount and we go to civil court. What would the process then be? I read up on it but was confused on what happens if he doesn't show up etc

Stay calm, take it easy, don't jiump into things yet, wait and see. I don't think you'll have to go to small claims court, you have the proof, the moron will pay you back if he's smart.

I want to believe that it will go smoothly and I will just get my money back, but I don't know how I can trust this guy... What I still find so weird is that he gave me all his correct info including birth certificate and soc security card. The fellow has a record and if I feel unsafe/threats start then what are the steps? Would it be good to keep having the sheriff call and speak to him?

I would record any conversations with the guy, that are not done with an officer present. If that is legal in your state, in AR it is, if one party knows it is being recorded i.e. you.
