Seat foam (does that go in here?)

Hey guys, just wondering what those of you who make your own seats are using for foam. I've seen guys using multiple layers, just wondering what they are and where to get the material?

The multiple layers are different densities. You dont want a totally soft seat otherwise you'll bounce against the seat pan. Likewise you don't want a really dense seat as that will obviously be uncomfortable. Some people don't mind the uncomfy seat as they only ride short distances, others prefer more comfort.

Look for closed cell foam for the base layer, and then add on some softer foam if you want more softness/thickness. Example of base layers would be camping mats, yoga mats etc. In Australia we have pool shops that sell foam too for making outdoor furniture cushions etc for the softer stuff.

Or you can go to a seat upholsterer and buy some of their offcuts.

This thread has some good info:

I'll probably be buying a slab of 2" rebond foam soon, to do my own seat with. It's expensive stuff, but it's definitely dense and shapable. Maybe I'll cut up what I have left and sell small pieces.

This foam is affordable, easily cut, sand-able (to a degree), and fairly cheap. It's also closed cell, meaning it won't absorb water. I made my seat with it, and although the seat is not completed, i have sat on it a number of times. I think it will be fairly comfortable. I made mine 2 inches thick.

I prefer to use open cell foam that is dense (firm) for comfort. Some upholsterers use a thinner layer of softer foam on top of the dense foam. Good quality foam costs more, but you can feel the difference--especially if you go on longer rides.
