Seat padding

What are you guys running for seat padding? I put 150 miles on the KZ today and riding on a single piece of 3/4 inch neoprene was like torture by the time I got back to the shop.

You can get high density polyurethane foam from Willie & Max. It is 15" x 15" and comes in 3 pieces, two pieces 1" thick and one 2" thick. I work there, so this is what I use on all of my personal projects... it's the same foam used in the Willie & Max touring seats, so you know the denisty is correct. It's pretty firm, so it won't all squish down over a long ride.

I got a closed cell foam kneeling pad from princess auto. Used that. I just put 400 KMS / 240 miles in one ride and it was more comfortable than the factory seat. One thin 1" strip on the cafe seat felt better than the big fat factory 4" foam. It is dense but cuts vibration and hot spots so much better. It is a black foam that is full of little bubbles, not really sure how to describe it right. cost like 8 bucks for a 12" square. It is not the harder foam most kneeling pads are made of. Another option would be a gel pad, they are great too and you can get them on flea bay in a form you can cut to size. oh yeah I am 6' 200 lbs to give you an idea of the weight on the pad. The bike and seat are my avatar pic.

Cheers,

two layers of sleeping bag pad foam (the blue walmart one everyone uses) batting from the couch that sits in my garage. i was short of cash and i figured since it was a comfortable couch.......

Like I said its not bad until about 45 minutes into a ride. I just saw they sell 5/8 slabs of gel padding on ebay for about 50 bucks. I might try that route.

On my XL350:

I also used the blue sleeping bag ground pad... mine had the "bumps" so I turned one piece over and fit into the other.... Got maybe 1 1/2" height max out of that. It was good but pretty firm and hard enough to be difficult to upholster over. So I used a piece of "deluxe" carpet pad... 1/2" thick, softer, and I stapled that to one side of my plywood cut-out. (seat base) Pulled it tight up, over, across and down and stapled it on the other side. Did a similar thing with the small riser at the rear.

(haven't done a tail section yet....)

I used a black kneeling pad that sorta feels gelly, but is still foam from princess auto and unfortuneately after about 500 miles the foam is shrinking/compressing and its basically junk so i need to redo, the pad :( Thanks for the suggestions thus far, any other options for padding?

Mattress toppers? If you go to walmart they have rolls of soft 1/2in foam for a reasonable price. Layer that ontop of some thin HD foam and you'll be golden. That's what I did and it's pretty comfortable.
