Simple mount plate idea for CB 750's

I've been trying to think of an easy way to mount my rearsets and have come up with this idea....(see below)

It's a steel plate that bolts to the passenger peg hole and then clamps to the bottom tube with a U-bolt. I'm going to use spacers to clear everything that the levers would hit.

Will make a plywood test piece first.

The advantage of this set-up is that it will be easy to fit (no welding) and very adjustable in both directions. Also, fully reversible incase i want change my clubmans over for mini ape hangers.

I know, it definitely won't appeal to the cafe purists who prefer the minimalist look.

Will list all parts required when I get it finished.

Interested to know what you think.....

Check Dunstall rearsets. Some of them clamped a large plate to the frame with fairly simple clamps around the tubes.
 
I ended up welding a small 2 hole plate on each side, then used spacers and some custom brackets.

I don't have a welder, mind you, could probably borrow one but I like the idea of being able to revert back to stock set-up if required.

Turns out I have a bigger problem. I have contacted 5 bolt companies here in OZ and it seems like they don't want to know about small orders.

Bolt Depot in the US has everything I need, but they don't ship over to here. So I'm forced to just scrounge stuff from where ever.

If anyone knows a place that can help me either here or that will ship to here let me know.

OK, so now I have a test plate cut from MDF and mounted to the passenger peg.

I'm 6'1" tall so I want my footpeg in roughly this position.

The allthread will be the new passenger peg................................................NAH just kidding!!!!


From this, I think I should be OK with a 25mm spacer on the back and a 20mm spacer on the front to get enough clearance.


NOW just got to get the U-bolts......

Yeah Joea, they are all great set-ups but, as I've said, I don't want to get rid of the stock tubes. I prefer to use them to bolt the plate to. Similiar to a the Dunstall set-up Teazer alluded to.

If it works it means that you could make everything from stuff most handy dudes would have lying around in their sheds.

I stress "if" because I'm not sure if my idea will be prone to flex or twisting of the foot pegs.

But no harm in trying....

Glad I found a place to see some CB750 rear set solutions.


I am working on fitting Hayabusa rear sets to my CB750F2.

I will be making up a plate for each side that mounts off the swing arm bolt and lower rear engine mount bolt (where the big ugly stock footrest plate bolts up).


My challenge is working out how much to trim off the stock mounting bolts, and if I can take the bolt head off the swing arm bolt with a hacksaw and then thread it, so I can then slip the mounting plates on and off without having to pull out the swing arm bolt!
 
Sounds like you are making things harder on yourself than they need to be.

Why would you even think of messing with a critical part like that?
 
So far so good...


The mounting solution was to get another swing arm bolt, shorten it so it is flush in the frame each side and tap it with an 8mm thread internally for mounting the brackets. All done on a mates lathe, then I tapped in the new swing arm bolt with a hammer as the old one popped out.

Gear shift bracket made up using CB750 foot shifter for the spline fit, shortened and rounded, fitted with the uni joint.

Left side plate mocked up from ply, everything fits in place and the trimmed down and tapped swing arm pivot bolt works a treat.

Right side mocked up, all brake lines and reservoir mounting points set up nicely, although I have ordered a Venhill brake line for the rear.


I will be getting my two brackets cut from 10mm thick aircraft grade aluminium and spacers cut from the same stock. The plates will be like the one on the brake side with full flat sides and no scallops (like the left side mock up).


So it took - one set of 'busa rearsets with brake fittings, two Honda bolts modified, two brackets made up, four spacers made up, one new brake line with banjos and one extended pair of wires on the brake switch.
 
Slight change of plans...

I am going to cut the bracket from 6mmm steel myself, bolt it flush to the bike frame and then make up spacers for therear sets off the bracket. This will be stronger and I can probably do all the fabricating myself.
 
That looks like a pretty slick arrangement there, maduncle.

But I will stick to something i can make using a drill, jigsaw and/ or grinder. Unfortunately, I dont have a mate with a lathe.

I also am thinking steel or aluminium for the plate. They both have their +'s and -'s.....

with what mad has laid out there you can cut that with a angle grinder, saws all, or jig saw... just first drill a bunch of relief holes in it... 100% can be made with basic tools... granted the right way is the mill... but so what, make it work... also may want to think about coming up with a design and ship that out to swagger on here he does amazing machine work! i highly recomend him!!!
 
Well - the latest rear set bracket design now has them being laser cut and bent from 6mm steel, as I worked out that if I got two bends in each bracket I could do away with the need for spacers.


If this works - I could do kits with two brackets and two modified bolts.
