Smoking stator

shamus

LDMMC
I have my wiring harness hooked up just enough so I could set the timing. As I was loosening the point, I noticed some smoke (white i think?) coming off the stator. I went to check the fuses and the fuse block was very warm. Only thing I can think of is that i possibly haven't grounded the existing setup properly? Is this the case or are there other things I should be looking for?

Definitely sounds like a grounding issue. I would do a continuity test on the bike with a multi meter.

Make sure that the rectifier and regulator are both bolt down and grounded well. Pretty sure both of them require a solid ground through the mounting hardware.

Could be the issue right there. Thanks dude.

Thanks, Kiley. My multimeter decided to go on the fritz today. Maybe it needs a good nights sleep. Or maybe I do..

Good chance you connected the battery terminals reverse polarity, and you were sending power to the stator. Smoke is bad. Your stator might be toast.

yup, smoking usually tells me someting burned. Do not want.. But the stator? How could one make that smoke? Like ADC, my money is on the battery. The stator provides current, therefor it's very unlikely to smoke itself. The battery however....

Thanks guys, battery polarity was correct as far as I could tell. It was a faint amount of smoke coming from the area of the stator, I couldn't find the exact source after I shut it down. Really hope nothing is fried. I'm going to go through the harness again and make sure I've properly grounded everything and try again. If it's bad, you'll hear from me again. Thanks for the advice.

If your battery polarity was OK, (don't be insulted, because I have done it,) then it's possible that your regulator/rectifier is bad. Only two things will allow power to be fed from the battery to the stator... wrong polarity, or bad rectifier.

Thanks, ADC. I bought a new custom solid state reg/rec so I hope it's not toasted. Is there a way to check it's functionality without plugging it in and praying for no smoke? A multimeter maybe?
