So it begins another Cj 360

Benefit would be questionable, difficulty would be pretty far up there.

You can probably get just as good handling from a set of decent shocks (Hagons, for instance) than you would from a modern setup.

Good deal. A quick FYI though... you probably won't be able to pull to redline in 6th unless you find a few more ponies. 6th is just for dropping the revs a bit if you do a lot of highway driving. 5th is already an overdrive gear, 6th even more so.

Thats fine, its for the highway! umm speaking of more hp though, what are some easy things i can do to boost up?

Job #1 is to ensure everything is in proper working order. Anything you do to an engine needs to be done to a "healthy" engine.

Easiest mods are an increase in bore. +2mm is fairly common. That'll bump your displacement up to 378cc. GS850 pistons are a straight swap. Machining usually costs around $150. If no GS850 pistons can be found, you can have a set made. Not usually cheap, but increasing the displacement on a 360 is probably one of the most cost effective (hp per $, not necessarily cheap but good value) performance modifications you can make.

Compression can be raised by skipping the bottom gasket and using Threebond (or similar) during reassembly. Make sure to use premium fuel after this modification.

In both cases, you'll want to check all the clearances after the work is done.

If you decide to do both options, you can expect to see between seven and ten horsepower.

Ok kool!!! thanks for all the help! I plan on waiting on the tranny to come in, get my gaskets, piston rings, mikunis, and bolts the put it back together, Then tear down again and look into boreing it out
I appreciate all the help!!

Im not trying to be a smarty pants...I have a cb360, I love her as is, She has a 17 tooth drive sprocket, She cruises at 65-70 real nice, Ive done 80 on her to pass vehicles...If you want to increase hp. and your parts are already on the way. I think you should build it, sell it and pick up a 750...that seems to be the easiest, to me anyway.

My brother has his CB400four for sale in Memphis. Its a bit quicker than my 360.

I might do that I may not I dont really know yet what ill do once its built.... I have a VStrom as well and I really like just having a little bike to bop around town on but something thats easy to take on the highway as well.... I think my dads about to pick up a 750 though so yeah...

Whats going to be the best way to clean parts of the case, spray with carb cleaner or something similar or soak them in something? I saw pinesol mentinoed in another thread??

I did my cases in Simple Green, followed with soap and water.

Any citrus cleaner should work on the cases. If there's something on the cases that doesn't come off with basic cleaner and soap and water, you may want to bring it up. The cases basically exist to keep all the parts from flying out and keep the oil in. They're not really exposed to much in the way of heat (when compared to stuff like the jugs and head) and so the oil and grease never really gets baked in. The dirtiest part is usually right around the exterior of the countershaft and nothing special should be required to even clean that part.

You may need a scraper to get the old gaskets off and you can resort to 400 grit sand paper, if needed, but be gentle.

Ok thanks, How should I clean the jugs, same way? I saw someone earlier painted the whole engine with Duplicolor aluminum engine paint and Thats kinda what I plan on doing. I assume all I would need to do its get the oil off?

Yeah. Simple Green (or other like cleaner) with a plastic brush, followed up with soap and water will take care of 90% of your cleaning needs on a bike. For the jugs, do the same thing, but you may need a tooth brush to get in between the fins.

Also, be sure to wipe down the inside of the cylinders with a clean cloth followed by a spray of WD-40 to keep the rust at bay while you have everything apart.

Air dry all the parts (or in the oven on the warm setting... don't exceed 200°F on this stuff) and then wipe down with denatured alcohol 30 minutes prior to painting.

After PJ told me to double check for hidden bolts under case...
I found these two Ninja A-Holes hiding and giggling at me.

sweet oily success. Thanks PJ, Sonreir, frogman, smLouie, mitchellsk, &everyone

BTW heres how I cleaned the jugs...The old lady was delighted.
Also, as soon as dishwasher stops. Be there ready w a clean rag. And dry the cast cylinder walls a quickly as possible. They will lightly flash rust. Nothing bad... its scary looking at first. But it will wipe right off.

Ok thanks!! umm I got all the bolts I just cant find anywhere to pry or beat on the case (gently) to get it to come apart

Triple check for bolts. The cases should come apart fairly easily.

If you need some leverage, try pulling the cases apart with the crank and head bolts.

Re-install a couple longer bolts in the shorter holes and just give em a couple light taps w hammer on the bolt heads. Not so hard to beat the threads up. It should come apart pretty easy.

Does anyone have experience with the Old School Speed shop rearsets?
Also I saw someone that routed there exhaust down either side of the bike then up and out under the tail, what are yalls thoughts on this?

Yes finally.... after feeling like that scene in Zoolander where they try to get into the apple comp I found two ninja bolts hiding out, trying to act like what i thought were drainplugs. Ill have pictures up later today but im planning on getting the new tranny assembled and mocked in, have to wait on my kick start shaft, gaskets, clutch plates and engine bolts then ill be reassembling. Still debating wether I want to bore it out, If I do I will have to increase the piston size correct?
