That is one of the best cm400's I have seen. I really like the seat modification and the pipes. Where did you get the pipes and shields? How much were they. Bad ass!

Wow, good work Tschiffely, you guys did a great job on the Yammie now you are knockin out a nice little Honda. I can't wait to get some shop space to crack into mine again. Lots of good inspiration lately on the CM's

Other than the factory carbs, what other options are there for the CB400 T / N?

Once you go to a dual pull cable any pair of carbs is possible. or keep the single pull and run on big one.

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

Any examples come to mind? I wouldnt know where to start...

I put Mikuni VM20s on my CB200, the only reason I knew this was possible is because of this forum, even received info on starting jet sizes etc.

I've got a set of Keihin CR 29s for my CB750 sitting on the shelf. 8)

Whats recommended for the CB400T/N?

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

replicate what your 200 had, then just double the carb mm. or run dual 32's or bigger... I cant tell you what you'll need exactly. i havent done it. I just know where to start (where I would start). just do it... And you'll never wonder again! (when it comes to your original question)

Very nice!

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

Really nice job on that 400. I would love to see some detailed information on the carb setup (make, model, linkage setup, throttle, etc..). The carbs are one of the biggest issues with these bikes and I would like to know about some alternative setups. Most guys try to get it dialed in a close as possible and then just live with it not working right or put the airbox back in.

Awesome thread. Helping me lots with ideas. I just started a "build" thread today and had a question. Hopefully one of you can help me out? Carb is leaking. Think it's the float, but doesn't appear to be adjustable.

Check the needle under the float. It's probably sticking.

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

Introducing myself!

I picked up an '83 CM400 Custom yesterday for $350, It's in great shape, and I am excited to build. I'm not sure exactly what the final look will be, but something cafe/rat ish. This will be my first build. Until now I have just has an XLR250 enduro.

Lots of great information and inspiration here!

I might as well start with the Killer question... Pod filters and Jetting. There is a lot of talk about how these carbs are a pain without the airbox, but there seems to be a lot of photos of bikes with Pod Filters. Obviously some people are running them with success. I am hoping someone who is can share their experience, and give some jetting/exhaust suggestions. I like the stripped down look without the airbox, and am willing to put some time in to tune if others have had success. (please don't be a downer and crush my spirit on the first day by telling me to run the stock airbox or get a different bike!)

Prepare yourselves for a barrage of newbie questions in the near future!

Cheers,

Andrew

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

Welcome, your bike is Canadian I think by your local, different carbs from the US, more adjustments and less emmissions controls that means you have a better chance with the pods. I did it with the same bike but I right now can't find my notes on jets etc. because I moved and all my bike stuff is still in my house 2 hours away until it sells. It will run better with the air box but it is huge and fugly. It can run at 90-95% with pods and I am fine with that.

Cheers,

Maritime

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

Thanks Maritime,

The PO actually said the bike was imported from Germany at some time, so I don't really know. I haven't had a chance to take a good look at the carbs, they are Keihin CV's. I wonder what the emission rules were like in Germany in 1983?

The carbs are marked with VB and 31D [C] SF, but I come up blank when I look for info on google for any combination for 31DCSF

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

Hey guys, quick question, rebuilt the forks last night but have a question on filling them. is it easier to fill from the bottom or the top of the forks. I know that seems like a silly question but it seem so easy to fill it from the bottom though the bolt hole used to drain them. Any feedback is appreciated. Its on a 1980 CM400E.

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(49+ Build Links!)

WOW, this is exactly what I had hoped for when I started this thread.

Something must have happened though cuz I wasn't getting notifications of posts. I had about 7 pages to catch up. I finally got around to updating my thread on "Frankenfe" CM400 build and have started an CB750 Build (Links in my Signature).

I have tried to add new Build Thread Links on page one that I am aware of. If I missed you do not take it personally, I just screwed up.

I added Mr Morchat's Cafe Racer Blog & Joeybaggadonuts "CB400 Project "Hm..."

Tschiffely NICE build you and you dad did there, Excellent Use of frame line and seat among other things. Would love to add your build thread if you have one.

I'd like to see what jets everyone is using. Also how far the the mixture screw is turned out. Even maybe the idle adjustment. To get a starting point on mine. I'm having some idling issues that need to be solved pronto!
