Somethings up with my shifter on my 450

Coast to Coast
74' cl450.
I recently rebuilt the transmission with a new drum and forks. No dents or pits or chips. The gears looked great. The engine shifted through all gears nicely out of the bike. I put it back in, and haven't rode it much but it was still shifting decently, however first was super close to neutral and a little hard to know if you were in. I wouldn"t say shofting was silky smooth but it was all there.
Today I was chasing the ghost of an oil leak and took off the side cover. Part two, the stopper:

was on the wrong side of the circlip. ahhaha! I thought, the source of my oil leak revealed. The stopper however doesn't really hold the seal in place or anything. It's kinda worn into a cone shape. I noticed theres ALOT of free play from side to side in the shift pedal. My first instinct was to place some washers on the spindle between the circlip and the seal so the shifter is pushed out and held tight....but I did not know if Honda intended this free play I decided to play it safe and take her for a test run.
Now, well, the shifter feels "rattley". That is, theres alot of play side to side still (oil leak better, but still there somewhat through the shift pedal opening). Also, you can"t rely on it hitting any gears when you want it to. for ten minutes of Brooklyn shifting, great, then you only have 3 4 and 5, then its back, then neutral is impossible to find, then it will only go 3 4 5 again. When you can find first, it's really flat on the bottom with no resistance, and you have a ton of free play up and down as well. Not right at all.
I was super meticulous with the transmission, have scoured the diagram and am almost 100% I didn't miss anything in the cases. Any tips as to my shifter problems?
