Sonic's XS650

Not a lot of progress on this twat.
Just pulling parts and powdercoating and tossing them back on mostly.

The other day I went around a curve an slammed the exhaust, so it was a little low.
Tonight I cut it up again and tucked it up about 2" higher. Looks much better IMO and shouldn't drag now

For what it's worth, I have a 2 in 1 of the same design, but it tucks just under and follows the contour of the clutch cover. The bottom pipe is level with bottom of the frame, so no exhaust is below the frame.

Exhaust finished
Used a random muffler I had sitting around, not happy with the transition from head pipe to muffler but fuck it I'm going to wrap it always so you'll never notice.

I've been battling the charging system. Screw mr Yamaha for his stupid brushed system.

Sucked it up and put in a tc bros 200 watt PMA kit.
So easy. And it works like a champion. 13.3v from idle on up.

The king and queen style special seat had to go. So I ripped it off and carved up the foam and recovered it with a spare nos cb360 Seat cover I had sitting around.
Much better.
Also tossed a spare fairing that I had on the shelf on it.
I'm beginning to like this bike.

Tonight Redman and I decided to see what it would do. Lined it up with the 400F expecting it to be a joke.
Nope. Trounced by the 400.
Off the line the 650 has it, but as soon as the 400 picked up some Rpms it walked off.
From a roll 50-100 the 400 demolished the 650 as well.
I was quite surprised.

That's quite a surprise. I would've guessed the 650 would have smoked the 400F. I know the problem.......it wasn't a Suzuki 650.

Nice. That fairing is solid.
Fairing looks perfect on there.
I thought so too. We cut it up a while back to go on a cm400t but it just wasn't right.
Fits great on this one though.

Rich, I was really surprised as well. The 650 certainly "feels" much faster than the 400 (torque!).
Just goes to show you can't rely on what feels fast, it's hard facts that matter.

LOL the little 400F is so much lighter and higher revving so no surprise. A 400T would have no chance on the XS though. Don't let Brad see this, he will have a fit that the Honda was faster than the Yamaha. ;D

I really thought the extra 2 fuggin hundred and fifty cc's would have made up the difference!

And yeah, brad might cry. And likely challenge me to a race with his 650.
I'm game ;)

Yep, the extra cc's make you think that sometimes. I worked with the head of engineering for the City and he had a VTX1800 he thought would take my old wing, sure off the line it was a bit quicker but only revs to 5k then has to shift, i get to 5 and just start making HP, He was not happy to see me blow by him in second gear. his extra 800 cc's couldn;t make up for the tuning of his cruiser or the extra 300 lbs.

Maritime, love the story.... sounds like his biggest problem was not buying a honda..... haha ;)

VTX1800 is a Honda ::)

yep, a big heavy V-Twin honda. Funny thing both our bikes were the same colour orange and nobody ever commented on his, just another big V-Twin, everybody asked about mine being the flat 4 etc.

:-\ sorry guys..... shows I ride a Honda but don't carry any in the dealership I work for.......... time to start loading up my model knowledge. geez somedays im just not all there, shoulda googled the model before the reply..........
