Speed bleeder problems

Been Around the Block
So the original bleeder in my caliper was so siezed that I ended up just drilling it out and retapping the hole. I purchased a 7mm by 1.0 inch speed bleeder, marked the hole location on top w/a sharpie, and inserted it.

I reassembled the brakes and got the fluid pumping with the help of some tubing and a vacuum cleaner. After no more bubbles and adequate pressure was achieved, I turn the bleeder 1/4 and pump the BMC. Fluid spurts out of the bleeder. So I turn it again so the sharpie mark is away and it continues to spurt. I almost completely had it removed and it still spurts.

So what's the deal? Did the vacuum pull the bleeder open permanently? Did I drill the hole too big? Any ideas to fix it?

I can see two possible problems...

You say the valve is almost out and it still bleeds? Are you loosening the valve? Try righty tighty ;)

The only thing that could jam a Speed Bleeder is debris... did you completly flush out the caliper after drilling?

I considered that. That was the only thing I could think of, but how to unclog it?

Did I drill too much out of the caliper and somehow prevent the bleeder valve from closing when turned?

I guess the better way to put it is that I can't get the valve to close. It doesn't matter how hard I tighten either the speedbleeder, or the other conventional bleeder I have, I can't get them to close. As soon as I pump the brakes, fluid still comes out.

Theoretically, if I put a bolt in the hole and pump the brakes, and the piston doesn't move, wouldn't it be something besides the valve?

The bleeder needs a tapered machined surface to seal on. Unless you removed ALL of the old bleeder the sealing surface is probably messed up.

Aha! So since I completely removed the old bleeder by drilling and retapped it w/no taper, a bleeder won't seal and therefore won't work no matter what I do?

Without seeing it, yes it sounds like you might be f`ed

Thank you! Lucky for me I have a spare caliper. I just have to extract the old siezed bleeder from it w/out f'ing up the threads.
