Speedo cable question...

Been Around the Block
Hey guys, got an 84' honda 650 and Im looking to purchase an Acewell gauge from Dime City Cycles but I need to decide if I need to buy a universal speedo sensor (magnets) or if I can use the S4 cable, or possibly even my stock cable. I was speaking to the guy at DCC and he said he thinks all hondas from like the 70's through the 90's basically used the same speedo cable. He wasnt 100% sure, but he thought that might be the case. I was just curious what any of you all had to do. I'll post some pics of my cable later this afternoon so if you can take a look and see if its the same as yours then I might be able to make a better decision.

Heres a link to electrosport's site. The only reason Im trying to avoid the universal cable is because as far as i know, they are the only ones selling it for the acewell 2852 gauge and Electrosport's service has been very dicey lately, took me 3 weeks to finally get through to them and they were kinda jerks when I did.

cables are at the bottom...

I used the magnetic pick-up on the 2800 I put on my ZX9 fighter - but then I didn't have a choice anyway (no mechanical speedo cable on the ZX9 ::)).

It works fine - as long as you ensure the magnet passes the pick-up EXACTLY as per the instructions.

Good thing about the magnet pick-up is you can extend the wires and mount it off the back wheel (makes for a cleaner looking front end ;))

Ya, I held up my stock cable to the computer last night and really compared the ones that are on electropsorts website and i didnt feel confident enough that they had the right one so I just bit it and bought the universal. Did you glue the magnet on or did you use the rotor bolt magnet? I may have a few questions for you when I go to wire this thing in a few weeks if you dont mind, since electrosport doesnt want to answer there phone anymore.

Ask me whatever you want ;)

I used the threaded magnet and bolted this to the front disc carrier, then fabbed a bracket to hold the sensor off the fork leg. From memory, you need the magnet to be within 8mm of the sensor, and it has to pass over either of the 2 outer lines maked on the sensor (not in the middle).

Pretty sure there are detailed instructions for this in the Acewell instructions, but if you run into trouble give us a shout ;D

Thanks man!! Ya i read through the PDF instructions for both the speed sensor and speedo and it all made sense, I just hope the threaded magent comes with the cable that i ordered. The guy said they do but didnt specify whether it was the glue on magent or the threaded one. Also, I've heard rumors that if you have a CDI box that it can possibly damage the gauge through the coil that you wrap around the spark plug. Any idea if this is true or not? I asked them but havent gotten a response yet.

Damage the gauge or the Igniter? Doubt it either way.

Damage the gauge... believe it or not I think i read that somewhere on this forum. I got a response though from electrosport though and they said it wont be a problem. So im just waiting for the cable to arrive and for electrosport to stock up on gauges and i'll have everything. thanks!!

Hey guys I just got the knock off acewell from danmoto.com and it has the magnetic speedo sensor any direction you can point me in as far as mounting the sensors? The instructions that came with the speedo don't tell me anything about it. Thanks

Post some pics of the sensor and the magnet. If it's the same as the Acewell, there should be 2 lines on the sensor and the magnet needs to pass OVER either of these lines....and within 8mm between the sensor and the magnet.

Love it when a year old thread gets brought back to life!! hehe

Let me know how it goes man, I still havent been able to order my gauge as Ive just been strapped for money since I started my company last year. Would like to see how you set yours up. How much did the knock off Acewell cost you btw? Thanks!!!

It was $107 shipped to Jacksonville fl, still not sure how the magnet setup and the gas gauge hookup?

I wonder if the install/setup instructions are exactly the same as the Acewell...

Speedo and tach cables use mostly the same ends. (push in with 5mm locating screw, it's how I can make 'Universal Honda' speedo/tach plugs ;) )
There are a few odd-bods, usually made in non-Japanese plants
If the cable is long enough on the 'knock-off', I would mount magnet to either gearbox sprocket or rear wheel hub
(For no other reason than I could ;D )

Rear wheel mounting the magnet and sensor is done a lot in the streetfighter world. Makes for a cleaner front end look.

Not sure if the Acewell or the knock-offs would freak out if you tried to mount the sensor off the front sprocket (much faster "pass through" than on a wheel). Plus, it would take you 2 weeks to work out the circumference setting ;D

I like pi ;D
I did not know streetfighters were using them on rear wheel, another good idea I had that wasn't new ;D
