1976 cb500t
Im gonna change the chain and sprokets on my 76cb500t and I was was wondering what a smaller front sproket would do for me? I want more highway speed which way should i go go? Thanks for ur time

Going down 1 in the front is almost equal to doing up 3 in the rear. You will probably see about approx 3-5% decrease in top end but bottom end wil be fun

I went +3 on the rear sprocket of my RD350 rather than messing with the front sprocket. Made my 1st gear pretty short, and it's quicker overall, but I actually gained on the top end, too, since it allowed the engine to rev out easier. (FYI, did this at the same time as getting expansion chambers, so hard to know what to attribute the change to.)

Regardless, going down in the front or up in the rear will run a higher rpm at the same speeds in the same gear, but it may allow your top gear to hold those speeds/roll on easier, rather than having to downshift. RD to CB may not be the best comparison, but that's my experience.

Going smaller on the front sprocket will raise your RPM for a given speed, and cause the chain and front sprocket to wear slightly faster.

It's not clear what your goal is by your post. As was already pointed out, gearing lower will probably increase your top speed a bit, but your engine will be revving higher. A LOT of bikes will top out at a higher speed if you drop down from your top gear, but the engine will be revving like crazy.

If you are looking for lower engine RPM at highway cruising speed, you will want to go the other way, but don't be surprised if your fuel consumption goes up, because it may take more throttle to maintain speed with the engine lugged down to a lower RPM.
