SO, I am starting a build thread for the H1 after several questions regarding it. Hopefully I can answer most of them but please let me know if you have some other questions or want to throw in some input...

Started off with a beat up, stuck, all around pile of a 1970 H1

First up was to gather parts. I decided to go with a kawasaki 636 front end as I wanted it silver, and like the rim spoke pattern better than the regular 3 spoke wheels. The rear rim from a 636 is too wide for what I was looking for, and needed to find something that was a little narrower that could fit in the fzr swingarm that I already had (fzr swingers are slip in's in H1 frames) I found a matching pattern rim from a kawasaki 650, which was just about the right width for the swinger. Unfortunatley, it was a little wide still, so I milled about .25" off the outside of the hub and sprocket surface to get a better chain angle and to get the rim centered.

Next I wanted to do a mono shock, and have always liked the looks of the older cantilever suspensions of the ducati, so this is the route I went. I started by cutting off the entire half of the bike and welding in new side rails and bent them to sweep up into the seat. Also welded on some new angle support bars. Next, I welded up a vertical mounting arm and positioned the ride height. Once set, I bent some square tubing and welded it in as supports braces. Next I welded on some bent tube with threaded bungs to hold the rearsets.

Next I addressed the front end

This brings me to where it sits now. Still have alot of to do to the frame before I get it powdered.
As for the engine, it is a stage II with reeds and new pistons. I also rebuilt the crank and put in all new stuff when I had it apart. Carbs are 34 mikunis, and as you can tell I still need to get it back together.

The last few pics of of the aluminum oil tank that I welded up today. Unfortunatley, it came out looking too much like a damn spaceship. My original design looked better, but only held about 1 quart, so I added some space, but don't really like how it came out. Let me know if you can think of a better place to put/position it.

Looking good mate, love those old stroker triples! On the oil tank, you could just machine up a thin-ish slab tank for the oil and put it directly under the tank, between the frame rails. All it'd need is a small dropped spot towards the back for you to plug the nozzle into so it wouldn't ever run dry.

Cheers - boingk

Thanks boingk, I actually started to weld up a thing slab tank to sit under the entire tank, but ran out of gas... i will get it tacked together and weigh my options.

On that note, does anyone know a source to purchase weldable aluminum bungs so I can attach lines... or is there other options for this?

The TZ Seat has my vote! I always thought the same thing....you could build a bike around that thing. Not too many seats you can say that about.

not a fan of the tz seat with that tank just my $.02 i think that tank is gorgeous on that bike thought so you definately cant lose that.

You could go either way with the seats, they both work well on the bike. The TZ will be easier to mount a plate and lights around though, I reckon.

Another idea I had for the oil tank is a tubular tank running across the frame like this:

You could also do a pie-slice kind of tank so it would fit the frame angle in that position. Very unobtrusive and wouldn't hinder airflow past the engine.

Cheers - boingk

Another option for your oil tank is to section off the rear 1/4 of your fuel tank and use that as an oil tank. Not sure how keen you are to chop up that tank, but it would be an exceptionally clean looking option ;)

BTW - that TZ seat looks unreal ;D

Or. . . you could run premix! Also an exceptionally clean-looking option. Only problem then is that you'll generally use more oil than you need at low revs because its mixed with high-load use in mind, plus you'll need to carry a bottle along on trips the require a refil.

I'm actually in the same position at the moment with my Kwaka 100. Premix or no premix? Stock tank or something else?

AHHH!

Normally I'm not a big fan of tracker seats but that TZ seat is the tits on that bike. For some reason the cafe seat just looks stubby with that tank.

Well, i don't want to run premix now as I didn't slot my crank when it was rebuilt. The next tank sits under the gas tank, just want to do my final volume calcs to make sure it will hold enough. As for cutting into the tank, that is an option, but not on that I want to partake in at this point in time.
I am still open ended about the seat option, just guess I will prep and prime both of them and make the choice later... but I do agree that the tz tail does not go as well with the tank...but man have I always wanted a bike that had some characteristics of a bad boy TZ750

I'm a big fan of the TZ seat too! 8) I, like the others, am not sure it "goes" with that tank, but that's your call! ;) 8)

I prefer that seat kicked up a little at the back. I know it looks a little "Streetfighter-ish", but it was done with some racers "back in the day" first! ;D

A modern version would be kinda like this:

I know you'd hafta mess with the bottom lines of the seat/tank, but I would do it! 8)

Nice project though! Can't wait to see what you do! 8)

I found that "old racer" pic. 8)

I love it, but..... ;D

Hey Squirley, when you get a minuite, can you measure the dimensions of that TZ Duck Tail seat?? I'm interested in one for a future project and can't get dimensions off the Air-Tech site!! ;D

Thanks! Now... get to work!!   ;)

I love this bike you sir are quite the craftsman. I like the first seat too. The oil tank doesnt look that bad. Keep it up.

Hello Squirley! ive been following your projects, This one and the cb 550. I like them a lot! I have one question. The headlight you have on this one. From what bike is it from and where did you get it? regards from Sweden!
