SR500 vs CB550

They are both better than the other in different circumstances...

Ya, unfortunatly thats a near impossible comparison without a list of the things that YOU are looking for in a bike. Whats the plan for it? Resto, cafe, bobber, etc?

Easy. SR500. It's a nice looking SINGLE and it's lighter and much easier to turn into a classic looking cafe racer. SOHC fours are so common....

But it really all comes down to what do you want it for - what are your criteria for making that choice between them?

Cb500 is a four, so easier to start on the electric foot, but more complicated and more bits to buy and maintain. What is important to you?

Apples and oranges. Neither is better, and if you have half a brain they're equally easy to build.

A question like that is like standing in front of A Spitfire and an F14 and told to pick one. The F14 is faster, better armed, in all a better plane but in your heart you know which one you will choose.

I'd have a 550 (I already have 2) ;D
I've ridden SR500 and SR600
Stock bike handles pretty well, but, SLOW enough to be dangerous.
Needs a lot of work to be fun

I've always been a fan of singles. I guess it was the way I was raised. But I love the kick (and bark) of a good single. The current 600s and liter bikes have performance that could only be dreamed of when I was young. For me its more than sheer acceleration. I love my Weslakes. They may not be the fastest things but I'm very happy.

I guess i didn't think out the question all that well, sorry about that. What i really mean is, which one would you prefer and for what reasons?

I like singles and would prefer one to a twin, 3 or 4 for some applications
I really wanted to like the the Yam's but they just 'don't' until you gear them down (maybe combination of too high gearing and too much weight?)
For some reason the Honda XL/XR motor felt a lot faster?
Looking for an older style (pre RFVC) XL/XR500motor as it slots right into CB360 chassis (I only know because I had one stolen and when it was recovered that's what was in there)
DR BIG (Suzuki DR800) would be the thing to have, they haven't made the 800 for a long time though.(got a book where a German guy put DR800 motor into RG250 chassis, I know how well RG250 goes round corners 8) )
The LS650 'Sausage' has a couple of issues if you rev them (main bearings, cam chain tensioner) but will thump along quite happily within 'design parameters'
Never been a fan of the Kawasaki motor, always sounds like the big ends are knocking, even when new? (no idea why, haven't been 'inside' one)
