This is a recommendation of an ebay seller, yes ebay. I purchased a set of stainless steel bolts from STAINLESSCYCLE on ebay. They are for my cb350. Bolts took a little time to get but I was in no hurry and the price was good. I recieved by bolts threw them into inventory and forgot about them. I have recently came to the point that I was going to use them. Two bolts were about 5mm short. I wrote STAINLESSCYCLE a short message explaining my dilema. (I expected something like "you took to long to write us or this is how much these two bolt will be") But no they wrote right back, apologized, and said there shipping me two bolts :) Needles to say I will be buying from them again

I'm not getting a discount or anything, but who knows if enough of us metion DO THE TON, you might. Drop the name when you pay for your set.

I was just about to order a set from them since they are almost all allen heads, but the set says only 72 pieces. On MG's site they sell a set thats 92 pieces, but they seem to be phillips (boo). What are the 20 pieces that Ill be missing?

I havent cked out their site. But some of the pieces have to be philips bacause the hole they go to is coutersunk. I have heard of adapters, but I'm not sure I like the look. Also these are stainless (harder) and if you always use a impact screw driver you should never have a problem. Not sure about the difference is it the same price?

mg charges 45$ I know a few have to be philips, but Id just prefer it to be as few as possible. I really dont want the case bolts to be philips if it can be helped.

anyways here is their response,

"The majority of the case covers are socket heads. Thank you for your interest and please feel free to ask me anything else."

Its a bit more expensive than the ones on ebay, but these appear to not be polished which I think I prefer, and the set is 20 pieces bigger which means it covers something the ebay set doesnt.

Sounds good. I'll have to look into the bigger set. The set I purchased from them on ebay was polished. I believe you can get both sets Motor/Carbs for $50 bucks shipped on ebay. That is for a cb350. Drop his sites name maybe we can work out some discount or members. ;D

honestly I really want the bolts to be black, but I cant seem to find anyone selling these. What are screws/bolts normally painted with?

yeah.. Ive bought many sets from those guys and they are all pretty darn good!!

I purchased a set of stainless bolts for one of my XS 650s. They were advertised as polished, but were rather dull looking. I simply chucked them one by one in my cordless drill, and spun them on a cotton cloth with some Simichrome polish. They look amazing now!

Just a word of wisdom about SS...

What About Stainless?

Replacing the OEM-plated steel fasteners on the outside of the bike provides a good-looking, low maintenance cure for rusted nuts and bolts. When contemplating replacing OEM fasteners with stainless steel, remember that common stainless steel does not have the strength of common alloy steels and should not be used for critical, highly stressed applications. The stainless steel also has higher friction than steel does which gives less preload at the same torque. When in doubt, keep the OEM steel stuff for critical applications.

As well I have found that Loctite does NOT work as well on SS as it does on normal steel bolts... so remember to check them periodically.

I use Burk's Bolts for my Honda bolt sets. http://www.westcoastmc.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1_2 They have bolt sets for a variety of vintage bikes.

UPDATE Avoid Burk's Bolts, they have dropped off the radar and I had to open a dispute through Paypal for a set I ordered on May 12, 2009 and still have not arrived. I went to Stainlesscycle .com for a good set, reasonably priced and fast ship.

So what counts as a high stress application? Is this implying that the stainless sets are unsafe?

Most of the stainless bolt sets are for engine covers, signal lights etc. etc. I wouldn't replace things like engine mounting bolts, triple tree clamps etc. with stainless.

So those bolt kits are for the entire bike? I was gonna go through my parts fiche and make my own list and replace everything on the bike (from a hardware place) but if those sets are for the whole shebang I might just go that way....

I've bought 3 sets from Burks. Good stuff. Only place I've seen with complete sets is this place in England. I've bought bolts from them and they are excellent.

This place also has more comprehensive sets than Burks.

I bought one of the engine bolt sets from stainlesscycle on ebay.

If I swap out the bolts, should I be replacing the engine gaskets too? I'm sure its recommended, but if its necessary I might just leave the old bolts in.

Not necessary at all, unless you take the side cover off and ruin a gasket. Just do one bolt at a time. The engine cover bolts aren't torqued down hardly at all. Use an impact driver to get the old ones out, especially if they're Phillips head bolts.

not true at all, common steel alloys are generally not stronger than stainless alloys... some of the higher strength steels are stronger, but on average, a stainless bolt will be stronger than a regular steel bolt unless it is hardened
