Serious [ if dumb ] question. Can someone define "Steampunk" for me ? I'm assuming this is a North American term?

I've seen bikes described as such, but there seems to be a blurring of lines between several styles.

Steampunk, to the bet of my knowlege, is a lyfestyle trend based on a sci-fi subculture wherein one attemps to make their modern possessions, tech, machinery, clothes, etc. appear to have come from the Victorian era. The idea is to make something electronic or mechanical appear as though it's steam powered, instead of Lithium-Ion, sequential fuel injection, etc.
Lots of brass, copper and wood are used in aging projects. Most things appear to have some from the Industrial Revolution. The idea is to copy how things would have been envisioned as "futuristic" in the 19th century. Lots of Jules Verne (sp?) and Mary Shelley influences.

;D
Just Googled it, almost got it word for word haha! Lots of images if you search it on Google.

Cookie, your description is excellent.

I am doing a steampunk XS650 right now. Lots of copper plating, mahogany, brass and bronze. Primitive knife switches and lots of old fashioned instrumentation. I am actually going to make a steam generator with a steam whistle on it. The exhaust headers will be wrapped with copper tubing and I will use and old brass carbon tet fire extinguisher to inject water into the steam generator. (I hope it works.)

Amazing machine.

Thanx for the clarification guys - and the literal interpretation Cookie.

Why ???? Well it's been suggested that my Cafe Creme Boardtracker was heading for "Steampunk", so I wanted to know what that might be !

However, I can now say NO, it's 1920's Boardtracker inspired with 1920's do-dads - Brass fire extinguisher, hand oil pump, etc.

That said, I can also understand the attraction of the Steampunk genre - pix A-D ?

Anyroadup - thanx for clearing that up boys.

Would this be Steampunk ?

Here's a great site I go to for steampunk Ideas.

some pretty neat stuff :)

William Gibson and Bruce Sterling: "The Difference Engine."

Kinda started it all. Victorian Cyberpunk. Think it's a bit overdone now.

I've heard steampunk described as "Goth discovers brown."

Actually "Gothic" was a term that came into mind when I saw the two sidecar outfits !

Spotted this 1920's chair on E-Bay ........ 5 days to go ;)

I think this chick has pretty much defined "steampunk" as far as ladies fashions are concerned...and I always thought Willow has a little steampunk in her also. besides they are both super hot and fun to look at.

Steampunk is an anachronistic subculture based on art and fiction that assumes a retro-futurism in which the Victorian age continues indefinitely. Usually there is an element of steam driven technology accomplishing what more modern energy sources have. Anything that you can conceive of or create within those lines fits the bill. The standard watered down usage of the term usually loosely implies riveting copper and hot gluing gears to everything you own.

It was definitely one of those trends that had a cult following, and was destroyed by dreaded "mainstreaminization". Those guys do make cool guitars though.

Lol Steampunk is also connected to Dieselpunk now, which is a whole different subculture.
And, I wouldn't really say it was destroyed if I'm honest. There is a HUGE number of people following steampunk ideals, and not the ones sung about in this video XD
Personally I'm one of them lol. XP Can't stand the people that just glue gears on stuff, but that's me.
