Steering ball bearings

interceptor

Coast to Coast
I was going through some parts yesterday and found two small steel balls that I believe are for the steering bearings  Does anybody know offhand how many balls go on the upper, and lower steering bearings for a 72 CB350 (twin). No big deal right now, glad I found them. I have to take the front apart to do some things anyways, so I can check/insert them then if indeed they are said balls. Thanks in advance.

Sorry bud, can't help ya with numbers.
BUT..... if you're going to rip the front apart, why not retrofit tapered roller bearings.
Not hard to do, and 100 times better.

Just a thought.

Cheers.

I don't know the number either, but www.bikebandit.com should have the part # and quantity listed.

If you are missing 1 or 2, I have some extras (assuming they are the same diameter).

pretty sure it's 18 top and bottom.
Nothing wrong with ball bearings, most modern sportbikes use them (couple of reasons)
Taper bearings are more tolerant of bad adjustment and have higher load carrying capability.
They tend to last longer on some applications but otherwise they have no real advantage (particularly on a light bike)
Crowded ball bearings actually have less drag so can give lighter steering.

Thanks guys. This thing is going to be a weekend warior, so no need to really put the tapered bearings in as the condition of the existing bearings are fine.
I guess if it's worked for 38 years, it should work for a few more. :)

buy new ball bearings at the local bike shop. they can match the size and a hole bunch is super cheap (i think we sell 10 or 15 for a dollar). cheaper the more you get.

just pack to the point when you cant fit any more. they shouldnt be tight at all, and they should all be able to be pressed down without another being pushed back up.

Yours wouldn't happen to be from a 175 would they? I'm missing only 1 and decided to stick with the originals.

Yep - 71 cl175. Let me double check tomorrow that I have them just to be certain.

If Big R doesn't have them, I have a full set.
So if you get stuck, I'll post you a couple.
I'm in Aus, but postage should only be a few dollars for a few ball bearings.
