Hi All, I have read some of the posts giving stem bearing size match, etc. so one can begin to pick front ends to swap on their project bikes. How about people letting us know about their successful swaps (or even not so successful). Most who do a swap I am assuming do so to work up to a better, more modern, suspension and braking power to improve the bikes handing and performance. Can you tell us about it? I am most interested in successful ( and hopefully not to difficult) swaps for early 70's Honda 350 projects. Cheers, Greg
OK, I'll bite. I started with a 79 CB750 K model. Ugly, spongy, worthless single piston/single caliper front brake with wire wheels that were WAY out of tune I went ahead and tuned them but still hated that single brake. I scored an entire front end from an 82 750 Nighthawk along with booth Enkei mag wheels, both triple trees, a CB650 tank, rearsets from a Ninja 500R and some bad ass old school HONDA footpegs (still haven't used them though) all for 200$. Allballs racing had the steering head bearing conversion kit for about 30$. The newer front end is 37mm up from 35mm, and came with dual piston/dual caliper front brakes and air adjustable forks with anti-dive. I cleaned up the forks, rebuilt the brakes, machined the rotors at work, threw on some SS brake lines and a new master cylinder, and it works like a dream. The anti-dive is 4-way adjustable, and the forks are self leveling due to the crossover line between the 2 forks.
Now on to the 350 question. There are plenty of 350s on here, almost as many as have 750s I'm sure there are a heap of Honda bikes that have swappable front ends that will give you a much more stable ride and better braking and handling. Allballs makes conversion bearing kits for just about any possible swap, and they're inexpensive. All in all, it shouldn't take too much searching to find a suitable donor front end, and if you look hard enough, you can usually pick them up for a song and dance. Good luck.
Yes, my links require a bit more investigation as compared with that handy (and now bookmarked) page.
With the pages I posted you have to look up the dimensions of the different bearings originally used in each application, then find bearings that fit your new application.
Thanks for the AllBalls link!
Shiny Side Up!
