Super B ? Go or No-Go?

God help the child who grows out of everything
Good morning to the wonderful world of DTT.
At a dilemma with my build; I have an opportunity to buy a S&S Super B carb to replace the pair of stock Mikini BS36 carbs on my 84 Suzuki Tempter project. Asking price is $60.
While I have no issues with fabbing up a one-to-two manifoldfor my little 650 twin, I want to know if the 1 7/8" (47.6mm) carb will work for me. S&S say the carb is good for Big Twin and Sportster engines up to 100 ci, so no concerns about capability, and every review I've read about the Super B seems positive, even raving, in some cases, is this a good idea, or will I be wasting my time and (rather limited) money?
My stock carbs seem to be ok, although they could use a rebuild; the mixture screws and a couple jets have been mashed by the PO and I need to buy/fab new manifolds anyway, as my 28 year old originals are cracking and leaking.

Bottom line: Should I buy the carb and install, buy the carb and keep in case I ever wind up with something it's designedfor, or just leave it?

Thanks Von, for the fast reply!

Anything particular against the carb, or just a bad idea for the GR?

More curiosity now than anything else

Basically...

It can be done. Almost anything within reason can be done. But why? It took a bunch of really smart Japanese guys a long time to determine what worked best for that bike. Now, that doesn't mean you can't play with that a bit... But don't go nuts unless you want to spend as much time reinventing the wheel as they did making it round.

Again, not saying you can't do it. I don't know enough about the GR to definitively do that (you'd have to PM BigRich for the skinny on that bike) but I can tell you that it would likely be a massive pain in the ass to try.

Possibly the best advice I've recieved from anyone about anything!

Main reason I was considering it, is that I know my OEMs are going to need a bunch of time/money/parts just to make them work properly again...It's also apparently quite difficult to find parts for my GR.
Rich, I know you had changed the carbs on yout Tempter, and I think it was Pablo83 who went single on his. This inspired me. My thought processwas, "Well, need to do something..."
But, if it's not going to worth my whilet to make the Super B work, then I can always try the local wreckers.

So, if I don't use the Super on my current bike, is it worth hanging on to until I have the spare time and money to aquire a Sportster or Big Twin harley? Does anyone have any experience with the S&S carbs?

I would buy the Super B and sell it. There are plenty of other carbs that will fit with minimal expense / effort. Some people have spare GR carbs around (ahem......), and VM34's work with minimal effort (but of course they aren't cheap). Personally, I would try to fit some GS500 carbs on the cheap. Get a GS throttle cable, the GS intake boots, and the carbs, and you're pretty good to go.

Thanks Rich, I'll check that out!
Are the manifolds the same from the 550 to the GR?

You mean the intake manifold diameter on the cylinder heads? That, I don't know. I could find out given some time......

Sorry, I haven't been sleeping well. You suggested finding GS550 carbs for the GR. I was wondering if I'd need GS manifolds as well and if the manifolds will fit the GR

Oh! I'm almost positive they would fit together each way. But gs500 intake boots are much easier to come by than GR parts any day. My biggest concern with the 500 carbs would be the jetting changes (since the 150cc difference in motors).

Awesome, thanks!
Going to pick up the Super B for my parts shelf on Monday
