Superbike Bars

Hi, I just bought some black superbike bars for my 1976 KZ400D and was attempting to install them tonight. The problem I ran into was the throttle cables and the clutch cables seem to be too long.

The throttle will not snap back like it's supposed to, do I need shorter cables or is there enough room for adjustment at the carbs? Also is there a way to shorten up the clutch cable? Since the bars are powder coated I'm also going to have to take some paint off for the horn switch ground.

Anyone have any tips for me? Thanks :)

Try lacing the throttle cables between the forks and such to help with the slack. I put clubman bars on my kz650 and had the same problems. My cables are 10-12 inches too long. If that doesn't work, then you'll have to look at shorter cables. Try lacing first and see how it works.

Just like he said above, route them through the forks. I've used clubmans, superbike bars, and daytonas on my KZ400 with no issue and it's never looked out of place.

yeah i had the same problem with my kz1000 but i got them rerouted and they work fine and barely seem to long now. But with my bars i had to replace the clutch and brake levers cause the brake resevoir was at a wonky angle.

Thanks for the tips, I'll try to reroute them. I was working with a limited amount of time last night. I should have some free time on this holiday weekend

Real quick, shout out to the other KZ guys, when you routed your clutch cable, did it feel like your clutch was stiffer? Mine is and when I compare it to other bikes, it's mega stiff. Throttle cables are fine. Just wondering if it's my lacing or if I need to find an adjustment somewhere else. Thanks.

I can't speak for rerouted cables because I obviously haven't done it yet but you can easily adjust your clutch. There are 3 points of adjustment: the clutch housing, clutch cable and clutch lever. Here's a link to the manual if you don't already have it http://www.kz400.com/WorkshopManFrameset-5.html Clutch adjustment is on page 11

BTW Valvesprung, I really like what you've done to your KZ

Thanks for the help. I got the bars mounted today. Just had to reroute the cables to the other side. Also since the bars are powder coated black and I need a ground for it I managed to sneak a wire from inside the horn switch housing and out the wiring harness to ground it to the frame under the tank.
