Supermoto Wheels/Brakes on Cafe??

Has anyone ever heard of putting supermoto wheels and brakes on a cafe bike? I was liking the idea of upgrading from drum brakes to disks, along with putting more modern rubber on my project CL450 and one of my friends suggested this. Any reason why this wouldn't work?

i'm no genius, but i've given this a bit of thought... there are 3 issues as i see it:

1. axle. you'd need to find a sumo hub that either had the same axle diameter as your 450, or that there were bearings available for the hub's inside diameter which fit the axle.
2. space/ers. you'd need to find a hub that was narrow enough to fit between the forks. vintage stuff is narrower than you think compared to modern stuff! then you'll need spacers made up to fill the gaps.
3. caliper mounting bracket. sumo brake rotors are probably going to be larger in diameter than your stockers so even if you wanted to keep your old skool hockey puck caliper you probably couldn't so you'd need to come up with some way to pick up the weirdo mounting points on the 450 fork and locate a modern caliper further out to match your new rotor.

i think that the axle and spacer issues are the most easily resolved. i see the caliper mounting one as needed more skillz and creativity. but i like this idea, so if you get anywhere with it keep us posted!

if you're going from drum to disc there won't be any caliper mounting points.
you can always switch out the front end to something that will accommodate a bit more wheel and thats set up for a disc. if you get a whole front end you can also get the master cylinder and brake lines which you'll need as well.
a good place to start is with your steering head bearings. look up the part # at some of the aftermarket online shops and they generally cross reference it to any bike that uses the same bearing. then you can see what front ends may fit without to much modification. you'll also need to make sure the steering head uses the same size stem bolt, but thats easier to get around than different sized bearings.
then, like overdraft said, axles and spacers and you should be good
thanks

Which part would that be?

#6/7 are the steering stem bolt (at least i believe thats what they call it) and everything on the right side of the page is the steering bearing assembly, however you want to look for tapered roller bearings, not ball bearings as that will give you a) better performance b) ease of installation and c) cross reference to a larger # of bikes which use the same size but more modern bearings.
try here for starters:

this is a good starting point but remember theres more to it than bearing size but thats one of the most important factors in a front end swap.

hope that helps.

Classic Bike Magazine (British mag) just finished a Triumph T140 Dirt Tracker project that solved similar problems. It would be worth a look at the current and past issues to get an idea of what you would be in for.

Sounds like a fun build. Hope it works out for you.
