Hey guys, got a 1979 GS550 all stock motor except for k&n pod filters, 5 steps up in main jets. Runs great and pulls hard until it hits 6k rpm. And it just Falls flat on its face. Already checked & replaced plugs, checked valve clearance, coils. Cleaned the carbs really good and replaced all the o-rings. Any ideas?

I've been battling something similar, check out my thread on do the ton, maybe it can help.

Long story short, my story started with getting my GS450 to work with pod filters. I switched carbs altogether, messed with jetting only to find out on a dyno the reason it studders so bad (or falls on its face). at 5 k RPM is an ignition problem.

Good luck. I'll bookmark your story to see what you figure out.

Have you solved the ignition problem yet? My bike will rev great in neutral all the way to 12 grand. That's kind of why I was ruling out ignition issues.

I'm waiting for a CDI & caps to come from eBay. I hope by the end of the week I have the parts.

I thought this was interesting though. CXman posted it to my thread. It's an easy check of the caps.
