Tank cure big problem

Rene Holsebro

Been Around the Block
I lined my tank with tank cure. It went really bad. It looked very Well right after, and it hardned for 10 days but as i put petrol in, it dissolved more or less and now its like rubber, and fell off several areas inside the tank. How do i remove it now, so i can start all over, because, in some areas its ok and not loose.
I hope you understand my translating from Danish to english ;-)
PS. I did clean the tank with tankcure cleaner first.

Was the product called KREEM?

Use MEK to clean it out. It will be difficult.

Acetone should work too, but it will take longer and require some work -- swishing around nuts and bolts.

Use POR-15 or Redkote if you can find them.

I'm in the process of cleaning out my tank as well.. I used Acetone (no MEK at the hardware store), and a box of 3/4" wood screws (the cheapest ones I could find).

So far I put the acetone and screws in the tank, shook and rolled the tank around, left it for a bit (while I worked on other things), shook and rolled in around, left it for a bit, and so on. Lastly I drained the puke like liquid out. After this process the coating is completely off but there are still scraps that need to be washed out. I plan on using another couple of quarts of acetone to finish the process off.

After all that I'm going to use caswells epoxy liner to reseal it because I have some pin holes and don't want to try to weld the tank.

Cheers

Damn i knew it would be a pain in the ass. After all that work of cleaning and rinsing again and again, and now its all worse than when i started. I threw the Can out but it was seethrough just like what you use for fiberglass.

yep, for me cheapping out on the tank is costing more then just buying a decent one.. but I'm stubborn so I'm going to finish!

I Think i've come to the conclution that it was the Lead additiv that gave me the problem, because i put it in after i came two liters of prtrol in, and somebody told me that the additiv is an effektive paintstripper. Now that i've had a camera inside the tank i see that its pretty much only the surface that was in contact with the additiv, that is affected. So i Think i Will clean out the areas thats loose and then give it another layer of the tankcure. Dont you Think that is ok?

You shouldn't need to use lead additive.

Motorcycle manufacturers used hardened valve seats long before Unleaded gasoline was mandated. So they didn't require any additives when the change was made

Easy test, put some normal gas in the tank. Swish it around, see if more comes off. If its all good then put the additive in and swish around a bit.

If you are going to re-cote the tank I would try to get all of the old liner out first. One loose bit of liner could ruin the re-coat.
