Tell me about this bike (Cb650)

Hey guys,

I found this bike in the local trader and had a few Q's since I don't know too much about the 650's.

He says it turns over but doesn't run. The 3 things I can think of are:
1. points and condensers
2. coils
3. spark plugs

Also, is this year the changeover to the newer style ex. (no kickstart, mag rims instead of spoke)?
I plan on phoning the guy tomorrow but just wanted to know what you guys thought.

The CB650 is sort of the second-cousin of the Honda SOHC4 world. You know they're related, just not entirely sure how.

That being said, I think the engine is pretty solid, and like any bike, you can make it look like whatever you want. For $120 you can't go wrong. You could sell a few parts off it and make all your money back then sell it for scrap.

The fact they say it comes with a fuel tank and a cable is a little confusing - do they mean extra tank? Is the bike complete and not in boxes?

Oh, and lots of similarity between the CB550 and CB650. I've heard the top ends can be swapped out. Apparantly some would put the cylinders/head off the 650 onto the bottom end of the 550, which was lighter than the 650 bottom end.

Others have swapped the entire 650 engine into the 550 frame, which is apparantly more difficult than some will have you believe.

How eager are you to tune and sync 4 carbs?

I used to have a cb650 project and from what I can remember it was more similar to a cb750 than the 550. when I was selling it a guy came over that wanted to put the 650 lump into his 500 frame. finding parts was annoying because there is sooooo much out for the 350,450,550 and 750 and near nothing for the 650.

I seem to remember the frame being very close to the 750 because I distinctly remember feeling like I had a slow 750 rather than a fast 550.

Ive "heard" that putting a cb750 motor into a cb650 frame is more difficult than you'd expect.
The mounts dont line up, its physically a bigger & heavier engine, etc..etc..etc...

but for $120 bucks, like Tintin said, you cant go wrong...

cb 650 cam will swap to a cb 550,,,I'm told!!.....good luck!!

The CB650's aren't a bad bike. Its CDI ignition so it doesn't have points. I had one for about 5 years, then sold it to a friend, and now he sold it last year. Cb750 wont fit in there. CaptBlood is right though, not much stuff out there for these bikes like the other CB's.

Well i talked to the guy, and he scared me off a lil bit. He said that it doesn't have a TOD and both he and the previous owner have tried numerous times to fix it with no luck. And if that 750 engine won't fit without a big hassle then I'm just gunna pass this one by.

But, I might have found another bike. Its a '79 Yami 650 Special.

Its a little bit more $$ but it says its complete and just needs "refinishing" whatever that means.

So I guess I'll phone this guy today and get his 2 cents on the bike then I'll report back here with my findings.

There is TONS of stuff out there for XS650s. You'd be way better off with it...

Definitely grab the Yamaha 650. WAY WAY WAY more parts and support. The bike can be made to look like ANYTHING you want too.

This is my project XS650:

Oh, and I should mention my brother CanadaDan here on the board has an XS650 in Winnipeg that I think he's still selling. It's a runner and in fine shape.

I am looking for something in the cheaper range, and preferably something in not the best cosmetical shape.
I don't have the heart to chop something up in good shape. lol
