The dreaded P.O.S., or previous owners screw-ups.

Out

Been Around the Block
I remember joking on the chat about previous owners and the things you find all screwed up while wrenching on your machine. I cant remember who I was talking to, but please jump in as it was really your idea. Well, after recently bringing home a Yamaha RT180 I have been taking it apart to see just how bad it is. The price was pretty low, so that is always a good indicator of work ahead. Well, so far it is pretty bad. The thing that has me worried the most is the fact that a missing air filter and a dirt bike are a bad combo. Now there was a huge mouse nest in the air box but it did nothing to filter out the dirt. The opening of the carb was full of mud so she has been breathing dirt for a while. The oil injector line was securely hooked to the bowl drain. There is more, but I only have a pic of the carb for now. With a shot of fuel in the plug hole it did fire and run, but I think an overbore and piston kit are going to be a necessity to be rideable...Oh yeah, a quality filter too.

My last project bike was a CB360, described as a ‘nearly finished project, running‘

the bike did indeed run of a fashion, and the neutral light glowed brightly whether in neutral or not, and the glow grew brighter with revs !

a new battery was recently fitted but was not charging..... new reg-rec i hear you say and so thought i

before fitting the new reg-rec i thought i’d do the ‘full power mod’ which involves simple rewire of the alternator output.

that’s when i found the problem....

the cb360 loom has only two multi pin plugs, both 4 pin, and yes the PO had swapped them over!

looking at the wiring diagram this would cause the entire unregulated alternator output to be directed to the neutral light, reverse polarity, whether in neutral or not ! Symptoms explained !

plug swapped and new reg-rec ( from Matt at Sparckmoto) and all good ( including with LifePO4 battery)

Wonder what i’ll find on ky new 550 project

Ha, that is funny. Seems if it can be goofed someone will do it ,and then someone will Sherlock Holmes it back to health. Cool that Matt hooked you up. I have a project CB350, and an XL100 that came with Sparckmoto harnesses in the parts box. They look high quality. Good luck with the 550!

Got a few more pics today. Rubber oil cap fit as a tank rubber, I almost could not pull the tank of as it was so swollen. Tank JB welded over the rust, and stacks of SAE washers in place of tank rear mounts. I like fixing things like this. Anything you do is an improvement. :)
