The maddest 19 year old here? 1966 BSA Hornet "Fighter"

Assuming you hosed it with PB Blaster / wd-40?

You can try a flathead screwdriver in the slot on the side and try to spread it apart a little too. Or get a small puller on it.

someone suggested putting some flat bar in the groove there, and wind the bolt down through the threaded hole. That will put pressure on the flat bar, and open up the spline a bit. That was for the Jap stuff, which has the opening on the outside, but it may still work for you??

All good. Screwdriver in the slot opened it up a bit and used another one between the case and lever to pry it off.

Cheers! ;D

Good on ya for wanting an older gal!
Love them Beezers. Had a couple A-65's back in the early '80s and they still tug on my heartstrings
Those pipes are SWEET!

Thanks for posting your build. Your gonna love riding this. I have 2 BSA Lightnings. When they run right they are fast, sound great and have no brakes. It is a awesome thrill. The smell is great too. Good start. You have your entire life to grow bitter and ride Japanese.

Long time no update.

Haven't really been doing much lately pretty much because there was much I could do!
I bought the new carbys a few days ago so hopefully they should be getting here in a few days. Amal Concentric Mk1's. Got the pair for $330.

Also, I need some help.
It seems that I only have a tacho and no speedo. I can see where the tacho cable goes and how that runs but I don't know where the speedo cable connects to. I have seen the "speedometer gearboxes" like this:
speedogear.jpg

But I have no idea where it goes or how it connects.

Any advice would be a major help.

If it was a jap bike, I'd say the front axle passes through it, and it goes on the left-side of the front wheel. A couple of tabs engage in a housing in the wheel hub, and a locating tab on the fork leg stops it spinning around.

**** updated with pic *****

just took this pic to explain it a bit better:

Seeing as how it's not a jap bike, I can only offer this as a suggestion ;)

Cheers! I'll have a look tonight!

In other news, I got my carbys in the mail last night, I'll post some pictures later. They're purdy lookin' things :D

Speedo drive mounts on the rear wheel, non chain side. That's how it is on my Bonneville... and by the time they built your bike, they were already sharing parts.

Haha too right Ian ;D

And cheers judey! I'll take another look

So last night I put on the carbys, new petcocks, fuel lines and what-not and I must say it's looking great! I'll post some pictures soon hopefully, probably wont be home til Satdee, haha. Only a few minor things left and I should soon have it running!

But before I do that, I have run into another problem... The gearbox!

I can shift into 1st and into 2nd from neutral but I can't go beyond 2nd. I was told to try rolling a bike a tiny bit and then shift into 3rd because it would select the gear fully while turning over?

The clutch is also screwing me around. When I pull it in, it doesn't seem to the free the gears so the engine still turns over with the clutch in. Any idea what could be wrong? I haven't opened up the right hand side other than the outer cover (just where the kick-lever return spring is) as I'm lacking confidence and there is a few things to remove! :-\

From what I can see inside the outer cover, the spring and the arm seem to be in working order. I just haven't gone beyond that.

Any hints would be a serious help! ??? ;D

If it hasn't been ridden in a while the clutch plates are probably just stuck. The proper procedure for that is to dismantle the clutch and free the stuck plates... but on my previous bikes I've simply put them up on the centrestand and shifted into first at idle. I imagine getting the bike rolling in neutral and shifting into first would achieve a similar thing, but its totally up to you.

With shifting to 3rd, you may be experiencing gearbox binding. If so, all bikes have this. You can roll the bike back and forth and feel the bike want to stop as it encounters engine compression. You are only able to shift between the two compression points. Check it out, but don't worry - wait until you can take it for a quick test ride before you freak out completely.

Cheers mate - boingk

Cheers, thanks for that! :)

Tried rolling it and shifting into 1st but I don't think theres enough room in my driveway for a proper go.
Try again once the bastard next door moves his bloody truck! :D

If that doesn't work I'de let you know that the bike hasn't been run since about 15 years ago and has about 2 inches of oil left in the tank if this helps?

In other news, I'll be posting some pictures later of all the shiny new toys I got for her!

OK! Finally uploading some new pictures! ;D

First we have my need for a tank mount. Probably not going to use it but here it is anyway.
I thought that improvising with things is what I do best, whether it's fixing my bedroom window or opening a beer!
This is part of a lamp base I found in the shed in mum's box full of vintage lamp parts (she's into making cool, vintage looking lamps!).
Image228.jpg

Doesn't quite fit.
Image231.jpg

Gettin' there!
Image233.jpg

And that looks alright. I'm planning on (if I actually use this) sanding it all down to the steel and then rust-proof it. It looks rather obnoxious so I might settle for something a little less noticeable.
Image229.jpg

Anyways! I also got the new carbys in the mail! All up, $340 for the pair and they look great I reckon.
Image234.jpg

One...
Image236.jpg

And two!
Image240.jpg

As well as brand new taps for the tank.
Image235.jpg

Here's an idea for the exhaust mount. Basically just handlebar clamps put together and one with an obviously better fitting bolt to hold it all together. Works surprisingly well!
Image210.jpg

Yup.
Image239.jpg

And thar she is!
Image242.jpg

So that's it for now. I still need a new battery and an oil change and then it should be mostly operational. With new oil and running motor the clutch should free up and not cause me such grief.

Cheers!

So the missus told me that I should upload some photos she took the other week.
Here by (her) demand, I present photos of me and the shed. Enjoy, haha... ::)

Cheers mate!

Nothing too spectacular so far. I'm thinking I might give the tank and side panels the rattle can treatment with a bit of British Racing Green. Shying away from the fighter plane style and heading for a more classic racer look I think... :D

OK. I'm confused. Where are you?! I see a victorian number plate on the wall. Stubbies of coopers, and some invalid stout?
you're a true riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma ;)

nice bike but.

cheers
