The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- New Electrical

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Wiring Loom Labeled

Here is a lame video of everything in action:

I know that the winkers are crossed. Its in the rear hook up. No biggie.

It's always 'fun' when you signal right then turn left ;D

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Wiring Loom Labeled

Ok. Originally was planning on getting a one-off, super custom exhaust. Then when money came down, not so much. I bought a bullshit exhaust set up that I mainly wanted for the headers. Then I got exhaust tips from the guy I bought the bikes from (separate transaction). Recently I purchased couplers and bends (which I didnt even need the bends) from coneeng.com. This is what I did.

THrough a series of super hot and fast spot welds, I welded two headers in to the collector:

Then I cut a section of the bend off and used that to get me the length I needed:

Then I hung that shit and put the tip on:

The right side took about 2 hours +/-. Pretty happy but I knew that would be the easier side.

Same approach for the left side, but I knew it would be much harder because the fucking kick stand was in the way. I hung the exhaust with the stand up but I am going to have to move it b/c it wont retract.

To make up the difference, I use a bend from the exhaust tips from the first, old set-up I bought. Actually came in pretty handy. Then I lengthened the outer header about an inch and a half. Here are some of the shots:

The welds and the quality of the pipes on the left side are not as good but I got the job done.

Here is the issue with the kicker:

So ya, I'll dress up the welds a little bit just to make myself happy but Im not going to spend a ton of time on it. I am planning on wrapping the exhaust because it doesnt look the greatest. Eventually, when time and money allow, I will get a different set made but for right now, given the tools and the product, I'm pretty happy with that.

Once I figure out what to do about the kick stand, I am pretty much done with all fabrication on the bike. I actuallly might be able to tear this bike down, paint it and reassemble! Wow... who'da thought, huh?!

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Wiring Loom Labeled

Thanks for the LED link.

Nice progress, I really like the look of your seat/rear section. The white rims look nice also, cant wait to see it all dressed up. I like that speedo also, I will search that one out too. Again, congrats on the progress!!

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Wiring Loom Labeled

I fixed my kick stand issue. I decided the best course of action was to lengthen the actual mounting brace. That was I can still keep a kick stand in the proper place as well as not have a need to extend the actual kickstand itself.

I started out by making an imprint of the bracket with a contour gauge and transfered that to some 1/4" MS. Once I got a pretty good match I welded it on. I have to say this was the hottest and fastest I have ever welded... and obviously I had to do multiple passes on it to get it right. I marked where the kicker was going to go, drilled a hole and then trimmed back the mounting plate so that it would swing. Now the only thing left to do is put a mount for the bracket side of the spring.

Up next, speedo sensor mount, and brake rod.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Wiring Loom Labeled

I think it would have been better to move the entire mount to rear of frame like on 1976> CB550F.
The early front mount would drag on the floor stock, extending it may make things a bit unsafe if it touches down?

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Wiring Loom Labeled

I hear you. Two things to consider... I dont ride super hard and we are talking about a half in distance from the kick to the exhaust. Would the exhaust hit too? Just playing devils advocate to your comment. I have to see a '76550F positioning, because that was my other option but I just couldnt picture the placement right.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Wiring Loom Labeled

Looking at pics, it wouldn't work anyway, 550 F has 4into 1 so no pipe on left side.
It would be just about in line with silencer/pipe joint

Agreed. I took a look earlier today but didn't have a chance to respond until now. I'll just be sure to suck it up closet the pipes with my spring placement.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Wiring Loom Labeled

Very excited about this little detail that showed up in the mail yesterday. Should round things out nicely.

Looks so tight!

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Wiring Loom Labeled

My body solder kit came in from EastWood last night. Anxious to try it out, I tested filling embled mounts on a CB500 tank I have. For a first run, its pretty fun and easy to work with. It doesn't look fantastic when its done, but they advice a light, tight layer of plastic filler before you paint. Check it out:

I spoke to the guys at POR 15 this morning because I had a concern about the sealer being in the tank before I used the propane torch on it. He said that given the working range of the solder, that I should be fine. I also, pick up a heat absorber paste, which is supposed to absorb up to 3000* for the surrounding area. Im excited to get the emblems out of the picture and clean up the frame. I was also thinking about using this to fill the stator cover...

Build is looking amazing man, just went through all the 50 pages.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Wiring Loom Labeled

Thanks, for the koodos, Reno.Hooligan.

Been sick and busy lately. Haven't had much time to do anything but I did, over the last two weeks, get a chance to work through a new seat idea. I saw this video of that dude Dustin Kott using a ring roller and some hot rolled steel to knock out a seat frame. The guy I bought my bike from uses the same technique. Only thing is that I want to actually paint my seat and not have the whole thing upholstered so we'll see about that. I might have to sacrifice what I had planned.

I bought a $40 P.O.S. ring roller from HF that bends up to 1/4 round. With some finagalling, it did the trick. Here is what I have:

Next, I plan on wrapping the thing in sheet metal and seeing if it can pass for being painted. If not, upholtered it is. I bought this throatless sheer... $150 and its really a great tool for the money. Im pissed I didnt have it before.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Wiring Loom Labeled

Very interesting. I like the shape.

Also just saw the transparent cover. Nice touch!

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Wiring Loom Labeled

thanks, man. and ya, the cover is pretty cool, huh? cant beat the look for $50.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Wiring Loom Labeled

Isn't that seat going to be pretty heavy?
It doesn't matter on a cruiser, but on a Cafe?

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Wiring Loom Labeled

I hear ya, PJ. Truth be told, it's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. It's only 1/4 round and there isn't too much of it. I was just having a lot of trouble working with glass and getting the shape to be even. Rolling the steel like this gave me a much more consistent arc. I'll take a few extra lbs for asthetics, on this one. Plus... with all the sweet Al parts you made I should be alright!!!!

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- Re-Working the Seat!

Just read through this whole thread! Bike looks awesome man, good luck with the rest of the build!
