The road racers 1979

Definitely a great doc. I wish some of our current crop of racers were as cool as those guys! Total bad asses smoking cigarettes, testing their race bikes on the road.....so fucking cool.

The late great Joey Dunlop. That man was a legend. He loved to race and was an all round good guy too. No outsized ego, just a regular guy.

I was fortunate enough to be racing in Ireland at the same time as Joey and Robert. Usually I saw Joey or Robert at the start and when I got back to the pits after the race!! They were both incredibly fast and brave.

Its funny but the people of Northern Ireland placed more value on ROAD racer than GP racers. Kenny Roberts may have been the unbeatable world champion but he never won a TT. Short circuit racers didn't rate that highly.

I think I posted this here before but I'll post it anyway. I took this shot on the way to the isle of Man for a road race at the Jurby road course. It was Robert's first trip to the Island. Little did we know at the time of the illustrious career he was to have!!! R.I.P.

Very cool. I most definitely want to go to the TT at least once before I die. Hell, that's the only thing on my bucket list.

Yeah, I can't find it either. I watched the whole thing though, and it was awesome. Leaves me with the feeling that my next bike should be a two stroke, and that I need to lose some weight, lol.

And I just happen to have a TZ from 1978 available for sale at a very reasonable price. ;-) I even have a stock OEM fairing just like Joey's...

OOooooooh, I'm salivating....and broke. Guess it'll be easier to work on the weight thing. Thanks anyway, haha.

Does it come with Joey's racing skill?

Hoof me old mate - get out of that workshop and post some more tales ...............bloody hell, you must have added at least 5 mph with all that shop time you've been putting in !!! ;D ;D

Have you seen this year's TT race footage ?

The dynasty continues. It started raining on Wednesday and all the accepted TT stars [ McGuiness, Guy Martin, Cam 'Donald, etc.] slowed when there was some spits of rain. Michael and William Dunlop then blasted through the field at undiminished speed and were waaaaay ahead when the race was Red flagged. When interviewed afterwards and asked if they agreed the race should have been stopped, they simply said they raced in those conditions all year round. ;)

Some of the on-board shots were truly awesome [ read frightening ].

Modern Moto GP riders just wouldn't [ want to ? ] cope. Make that any modern "circuit" racer really.

We DO get excellent TV coverage these days for those of us that have to remain at home.

That said, bike related films and documentaries are getting more and more air time. The next series of "Cafe Racers" is due to be aired this Summer / Autumn [ Fall ] - that should be a laugh...............

I see that French Idiot has been let loose with a Harley and a Featherbed rep frame. I do hope he leaves the sledgehammer and grinder in the toolbox this time - the Tuttles he isn't - just stick to the facts mam, the facts [ Car 59?].

The Dunlop legend does indeed live on through Michael, William and Samuel.

I have been going to the TT for 25 years........in fact I got back from this year's event only this morning !

I never met Robert, but as was said in an earlier post, Joey was a quiet, modest man, and never realised he was a motorcycling god.........

I was lucky enough to have met him numerous times, as he stayed in the same place as me while on the Island, and we were next door neighbours for a number of years in the 90s, right up to his last TT.

Back in the day, Joey would splash through the puddles without complaint, as would the other boys on the grid. Mind you...I can't say I blame the current riders for objecting to wet roads.

The Dunlop boys, particularly Michael, are awesome.......he is so agressive and fearless. We watched at the jump from Rhenn Cullen into Bishopscourt, and Michael was by far the most determined over the leap....

Any body who has never been to the TT and appreciates road racing.......you really must go. The Isle of Man is a stunning place, and the racing can only be described as awesome !

Not sure if everyone picked up on it, but if you click on the link at the bottom of the embedded video, it will take you to the Youtube link, which has the rest of the documentary in the "Related videos"

You've got the whole thing right there.

Oh, I'm aware. I would say that I may have already downloaded the whole thing and burned it to DVD, but I'm still trying to figure out if someone is actually still producing it. If someone does indeed still make it, I would then theoretically throw away the homemade DVD which may or may not exist, and buy the official copy. Hmmm, anyone seen new ones for sale anywhere? Maybe the copyright has expired? eh?
