DTT BOTM WINNER
Hi all, I have been away for awhile. I am now 24, and I think I have enough knowledge to be dangerous now. I am completing a Aerospace Engineering degree at Wichita State University. I have bought a 1981 SR500 that I had to jump though some hoops to get the title for, it has not been registered since 1982 and has been sitting since. Now that I have put over 3,000 miles on it (2,300miles before me) I have decided it needs a few updates other than the new tires, grips and brake fluid that I have already replaced. I well show you what it is now but this will be a very slow build, I am the PR and Drivetrain rep for WSU's Formula SAE team and I only work on Fri/Saturdays. This bike is amazing and I have never had so much fun on two wheels, I promise I will not make it look too far from what it is now but it is defiantly getting some new components. Besides all this, this bike is awesome and Dues thought they had a good bike at 15 miles. :)

One day, in 2050, a SR500 in pristine condition will sell at Sotheby's for $1M, and the auctioneer will introduce it as, "..one of three known SR500s not cafe chopped or bobbed in the early 2000s."
Same goes for CX500s.

Re: The SR500

For the purest, I am not going to do any modifications to the bike that will not be able to be taken back to its original state. After reading Tony Foale's book multiple times, I am off to this book now. It is more directed to my Formula SAE team as I have to fill in the intake and exhaust ports then re-machine them for the 20mm (about the size of a nickle) restrictor and come up with a intake and exhaust that is tuned for the restrictor. The good thing is that this will also apply to the SR500.

Re: The SR500

Every bike has a purpose so no need to throw it in the trash. I saved this from getting parted out, it sat for 31 years with out a title.

I have ran out of ground clearance and without proper training, I am hanging off the bike as far as I feel comfortable. I will be going to a track to on the 17th of August, so tonight I will be making some new rear set mounts to help get a little more ground clearance.

Re: The SR500

Hey everyone, the SR is going on sale. I am not getting out of the SR game just selling this one to get more tools.

Since some of you guys are SR fanatics, I have been discussing with my dad that I should sell it with the White Brothers performance kit because it is cool and time period correct. He disagrees and thinks I should put my brothers stock throttle assembly and carb on it then switch out the exhaust for a stock header and a muzzy muffler. What are you thoughts on this, I just figured I could get more with the kit on it.

Generally you'd get more for the stock bike and then sell the kit separately.

Yeah people tend to go for a "stock" bike because they either want to rest or it or make it custom. Return it to stock and ask the buyer if they want the kit you "never" fitted because of a lack of time...

Or be honest. That works also.

Not to disagree with your Dad, but I think the modifications were done tastefully and ad great value to the bike. Not only are they period correct, they are preferred amongst many SR500 collectors. I hope my bike looks just like this when it is done. Although, I plan on keeping her black and my pipe will be chrome.

Maybe offer the bike for sale at $xxxx, but then at a lower price point if the seller would prefer the stock set up?

i wish i had the money and the ability to get this bike across the country. i would love an SR so much fun to ride! and from a sales point of view like stated id go back to stock. i might not even mention the other parts and sell them separate while it means a little more work you could probably make a little more cash. How much do you plan to sell it for?
