Been Around the Block
**updated with photos/video**
na6y9uhe.jpg

Just picked up a 2-smoker today with 25,000 miles. Worked top end with wiseco pistons, overbore. Mild tune from previous owner. This RD is almost completely original besides the maintenance, parts replaced and work done to the engine
.
as of right now here are my plans 8) :

Short term plan:
GP style rearsets
clubmans/clipons
shorter seat+cowling
Powdercoat wheels
tune

Long term:
rebuild transmission
build engine to race

and some photos:

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker

Rebuilt carbs. Need to order some 115-120 main jets and some new pilot jets. There's 140 mains in this stock engine now so it's running pretty rich. Little to know torque beyond 4,300 rpm. These RD's are supposed to have a sweet power band from 5,500-7,000 rpm with a top speed of about 100 in stock condition. I'm topping out at 70-75. Need to fix that.

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker

Kool man there are a few of us smoker guys hear. if you decide to put chambers on your bike dont let the price of dgs fool you there great on a street bike if you need anything let me know i got a ton of parts

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker

Such a clean bike... Was this from a collection, or just a extremely luck find? What are you plans with it? Nice pics on the carbs - probably not just using a iPhone or something I take it? lol

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker

Also how do you embed youtube videos?

chambers eventually. these stock pipes are beautiful. chrome is in near perfect condition. I actually feel bad riding around in dirty weather with them... I could take them off and hang them on my wall. Hmm I wonder how the wife would feel about that. ::)

completely luck find. when I bought it the tune was shit, well it still is... It's running incredibly rich so I have absolutely no power after 4,500. I hope a rich tune is the only problem. Not sure if I said this already -- buying new main jets and pilots(a couple sets of 115-125 mains). Hopefully a leaner topend will yield better results.
I'm just using my wife's DSLR. I could use my large format 4x5 camera... but I don't really feel like processing film right now.

I don't plan to modify it from stock all that much actually.... at first. I want a new seat, this one is just too clunky and tall. Picking up some clubmans this weekend from a friend. Eventually blast and powder those cast wheels. I want to race her eventually. But not for a while.

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker

Clean bike, you are very lucky. I bet you can work on it without getting grease in that moose stache.

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker

Beautiful bike! If it were mine I think I'd just fit a set of moto carrera (sp) hydro formed pipes and call it good. I would love to get my hands on a bike like that.

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker

Yea she is beautiful. Its funny... Everyone thinks this rd is from a collection. It's just a lucky find. Im the 3rd owner. I have the original title from across the country... Literally. Oregon --> New York.

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker

Weather you hop it up or not the first think that needs done is crank seals the seal on the clutch side of the motor is usualy fine as it sits in gear oil but the seal behind the generater will dry out and pull out side air in. this will lean out that side cylinder and distroy your motor in a few seconds of a hard pull the seals are about 50 bucks and you have to split the case to replace them but thems the breaks with a rd. i order seals first with every rd/r5 i buy. its not worth the trouble of distroying a motor over. I made this mistake befor "as nice as the rest of the bike is the seals are fine, im sure. this bike was hardley riden." when it was all said and done i was able to save 1 cylinder head and 1 chamber everthing else was junk. replace the seals asap

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker

Beautiful bike! Nothing more addicting than a smoker. I have a extra set of DGs if you ever want to go that route, but if you have the money go for spec2 or Moto Carrera.

why dgs work great with the mufflers removed my (nameless) tuner ran the numbers for all the above mentioned pipes the moto c come on at super high rpm way past the comfines of a stock ports and crank the spec2 are nice but a fair amount of carb work is needed. i pulled 70ish hp outta modded dgs and flat slides and the pipes cost 200 bucks new

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker

DG's are a good bang for the buck pipes. They're an improvement over stock, but in my experience they do not compare to other pipes. The MC pipes are defiantly a higher rpm pipe but they are not any slower than the DGs down low, they just kick you in the pants at 6k. I have both sets of pipes and even on the stock motor the MC pulls much harder than the DG pipes. Spec2 are more balanced for the street than MC and even DG pipes require carb jetting.

Installed new 120 mains and #25 pilots. I might need to change out the pilots, she chugs from 4-3k when engine braking. Thoughts?

Cleaned the air filter.

She is much faster now with the new main jets. Can easily hit the ton. I haven't yet, though. Saving that for a special road.

Where is your air screw at? Try turning it in 1/2 turn and see if gets any better?

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker "Ginger"

1 1/2 - 1 3/4 turn. I'll try turning in half tomorrow morning and report back. Thanks.

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker "Ginger"

Sorry if I offended you Kop. I'm no expert, but love two strokes and have a well running RD400c which I have tuned through many variations successfully. Still I'm only an enthusiast passing info that has worked for me, so take it with a grain of salt.

I have ridden all three sets of pipes. I have two sets of DG pipes in the garage that I rode for years and I was quite pleased with. Would even be willing to pass them on to another RD enthusiast for cheap. I had a friend let me borrow his spec2 pipes for a few weeks because he always told me the DG's were holding me back and his bike was down. At the time I was on a stock ported motor with modded carbs and I didn't think it was worth the money to upgrade my chambers. Well putting them on and jetting two up on the main, dropping the clip down two notches and bumped my pilot to a 35 and it was like a whole new bike. I ordered new pipes the next day, went with the Moto Carrera pipes cause Doug gave me a good deal and I ride a lot of freeway, so didn't mind a higher RPM pipe. The power band is not as smooth as the Spec 2's but I love the hard kick of the power band and the cleanness of the hydro formed pipes. In my personal experience (I'm no expert, just going off the good old butt dyno) the DG pipes don't compare to the other two I have tried. I have heard the Jim Lomas pipes have an even sweeter power band for street, but I have no experience with them and they cost a pretty penny.

This is what Garry from Spec2 has to say about the the DG pipes:
SPEC II
"12457 Gladstone Ave Unit F
Sylmar, CA 91342
818-837-1313

Hello,

Pictures are at the end of this e-mail.

Thank you for considering us for your motorcycling needs. We ran my dyno for the first time in 4 years. On a customer's St II ported street RD350 with our RZ350 reed package and 30mm carbs, it made 56HP (rear wheel) with SPEC II F1 chambers!

The customer showed up with DG chambers. The DG chambers made only 47 hp on the same bike. Yes, it is impressive that a simple swap of chambers produced 20% more peak power. But, the F1 chambers produced 15% more power everywhere else. I have preached about how bad the DG chambers are for years. I have finally proved it. There are people out there that spend a lot of money on their engine then throw the HP away with the DG chambers. A ported engine with DG chambers makes the same HP as a stock RD with SPEC II chambers."

Now about the air screw. He mentioned he was chugging with the throttle off which is usually a sign of the bike leaning out on the pilot circuit. Since he is running a stock set up and a 25 pilot is stock, it might just need a simple adjustment on the air screw. I assumed the OP would know that in was clockwise(richer), but you are right i should have been more specific with my post. I'm pretty sure adjusting an airscrew richer half a turn is not going to blow his motor. If it helps the chugging then he can see if he is within proper range of the air screw. If less than 3/4th turns out then try a 27.5 pilot which many people use on stock RD's.

Stache I'm attaching a guide that might help you jet your bike.

Re: '76 RD400c -- 2smoker "Ginger"

So that is what stock Sounds like...lol
Very nice find you have there. That thing looks mint!
I run Spec 2's on my RD. I previously ran DG's. The Spec 2's do need bigger carbs plus the jetting jumps exponentially.
Enjoy your RD!
