Great looking BMW Tim. 8)

What's the /6 mean in the model designation?

It's a generation designation... the last were the /7's... then they abandoned this naming designation. Although the actual factory differences between Tim's /6 and my /7 are minimal and more evolutionary refinements than anything else.

That being said... mine's cooler 8)

Yeah, but mine gets ridden 11 months of the year (I don't recall riding in February, but I might be wrong)!

Did I say cool? I meant cold... ICE cold

Re: Tintin's 1975 BMW R75/6

Ha ha, and it's cold again! It just cooled off enough here today to go riding again. Have you shovelled the snow yet? Is that a termal blanket on the bike?

Re: Tintin's 1975 BMW R75/6

3 degrees and wet... lousy for riding.

Think I may need a block heater if this weather keeps up :p

Re: Tintin's 1975 BMW R75/6

Courtesy of my good brother, new euro-spec bars are on the bike. Managed to put them on without cutting the factory original 'zip ties' holding the wiring to the bars and also managed to remove and reinstall the 32 year old Magura left grip ;) Like it came from Germany. Now if I could get some metric gauges, it would be almost completely European.

It's in MPH?!? Bah... imperialistic crap... no wonder the bars were so lame...

What ratio do you need... I have an extra set of gauges.

Hell... you could have mine... speedo hasn't worked in 2 years and I shift when my boys start to buzz... so no need for a tach...but the cops still like to see the crazy things on the bike 8)

Re: Tintin's 1975 BMW R75/6

I don't know what ratio I need - my tach sucks - makes all sorts of stupid noise at different RPM. Maybe I'll mount old Honda gauges :) If you've got extras I'll try them out.

The number is on the bottom of the speedo's face... W=? ? ? ?

Re: Tintin's 1975 BMW R75/6

Well shit - that didn't work out well. Bars look and feel great, but my cables are throwing a tantrum. Clutch and throttle felt fine in the garage, but in reality the bike won't go below 3000 rpm now and the clutch is a lot heavier, which for a BMW clutch means you need to be a German weightlifter to pull it.

So for now it's back to the American bars, until I get shorter cables. Will be on the horn with BMW tomorrow to see if they happen to have a euro-spec clutch, brake and throttle cables laying around. Wish me luck. Would like to have these on for Wednesday's meet up so it's either all new cables or old bars Tuesday eve.

Re: Tintin's 1975 BMW R75/6

I was afraid of that... everything throttle should be adjustable but the clutch is odd... shouldn't really be an issue... I take it you checked for hard radius bends etc?

Re: Tintin's 1975 BMW R75/6

Here are the pics. Not only did the bike want to go a little extra fast, my right carb decided it was time to overflow too! I know it shouldn't be related to the cables, but nothing else changed and it's never even hinted at overflowing before.

Anyhow - need the right length cables no question in my mind. I checked out Bob's but the throttle cable selection could simply not be more confusing.

Re: Tintin's 1975 BMW R75/6

Also turns out I don't have a big enough wrench to remove the nuts under those stupid cosmetic alloy covers on the forks. I thought they were the spring retainers - didn't realize they weren't much more than fancy covers. So the Progressive springs remain in the box. Even my good ol' cresent wrench wasn't big enough, and there's not enough meat for a pipe wrench. So a trip to Crappy Tire for a monster wrench is in the plans too.

Re: Tintin's 1975 BMW R75/6

That is weird... overflow has nothing to do with any of the cables...

Bars look great... now loose the Mickey Mouse ears and you're done!

They're damn good mirrors but I never did like the look.

Yup... It's a big one... 34mm if I remember? or is it 27...

Re: Tintin's 1975 BMW R75/6

the cable look like they have some pretty hard bends in them. you clutch cable looks like it come sout of the cable tensioner and bends up at a good angle, the you throttle cables look they bend back on themselves, could be just the angle of the photos. i have stock U.S. cables on mine and i was able to reroute them so the bends would be smooth even with the extra length. my clutch cable is the only thing that i could shorten some if i dropped the clip ons lower.

Re: Tintin's 1975 BMW R75/6

I'll likely try re-routing. I checked Bob's BMW and couldn't sort out which cables to order. The brake cable seems to be one model for all bars anyhow. I haven't opened up the throttle or clutch handle housings yet - is this a big pain or relatively straightforward? I guess I'll find out :) I figure the biggest hassle will be the fancy throttle mechanism.
