I find them on eBay for cheaper than what Thumperstuff is asking for...

Tim,
Awhile back you said you had a source for custom-made rear sprockets.
Up 'til now I've been ordering Azusa sprockets and getting them machined to fit whatever hub I'm mounting it on, but maybe a complete custom sprocket from the get-go makes sense...
Anyway, a contact or???
Thanks,

Re: Tim's SR500 - Feb 2 2011 - logistics...

Sorry for the lack of action on this guys. The rear hub is all machined up (thx to Ryan) but a kitchen reno has me sidelined for a bit.

That and the weather outside doesn't make me wanna even walk from the house to the garage, heated or not. I'll get myself organized again soon and get back on it, but the wheel lacing is likely going to commence shortly. Once I gut my kitchen and fill the 12 yard bin sitting on my front yard.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Feb 2 2011 - logistics...

I've got the opposite problem, I've got to finish the roof I started in the fall and then paint the house this spring. which at the moment gives me loads of time for the bike!!

Re: Tim's SR500 - Feb 2 2011 - logistics...

Well, the kitchen is nearly done and I managed to organize a bit of progress on the SR - mucho thanks to Paul Dutra of Back Alley Motorcycles in Toronto for getting these bolted together for me.

Wheels are ready, just need new bearings (different size axles). Honda CB hubs, turned nice and smooth with Buchanan spokes and an Akront front, SUN rear rim set from an old dirt tracker (I left the dirt on the rims). Shinko 705 enduro tires, and voila - awesomeness.

Re: Tim's SR500 - May 30 2011 - weeeeelz

Those tires look awesome Tim! If you don't mind me asking, what size are the tires & wheels?

Re: Tim's SR500 - May 30 2011 - weeeeelz

The wheels are both 19". WM4.5 rear, WM2 front.

Tires are Shinko 705's. 110/80-19 both ends.

Hubs are both front CB450 hubs. I have some serious adapter plates and a custom sprocket for the rear, which will sit on 3 bearings :) Gotta bolt it together so you can see how insane it's gonna look.

Re: Tim's SR500 - May 30 2011 - weeeeelz

Ok ok, I'll get the wheels bolted together shortly :) Got the bearings, just need some internal spacers made up.

Today I scored an awesome headlight at an antique market. It has a huge documented back story, almost enough to make me want to sell it instead of using it, but I'm not going to alter it in any way so no big deal.

It's a prototype fog-lamp made by Per-Lux Lights Canada. Was made in 1961 and submitted for approval to all the US States so they could start marketing it.

So what I have is an unused sample, mounted to a 12v transformer for lab testing. It plugs into the wall and lights up perfectly. It's a full stainless steel housing, with a 5 1/4" or so glass lens. It has louvres behind the glass, which are fixed in place to direct light down (fog light). The bezel opens up so I can remove the louvres and/or maybe put a different 5" lens in it altogether.

Nice mount on the bottom, like a Bates headlight.

Neatest thing is it came with all the documentation. Sample marketing material, photograph showing some smiling lady putting it together, suggested retail pricing ($35 / pair back in 1961) and ALL the responses from the different States approving it for use on their highways!

Gonna be perfect on the SR.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Aug 14 2011 - headlight - super cool find.

So a bit of research tells me the lights are still out there to be bought (I guess they were successful in their sales over the last 50 years). I'm going to contact the current corporation (Grote) to see if they'd be interested in buying back a little corporate history :) Might make a few bucks on the deal and just get another one of these lights for my use - they're awesome buckets.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Aug 14 2011 - headlight - super cool find.

Very cool light. How much are they new?

Did you get speed rated 705's? I did not. The one size I wanted for the 360 only came in a rating up to 90mph and I have been less than happy with them once I get over 55mph. It doesn't feel like they are balanced right. just a heads up.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Aug 14 2011 - headlight - super cool find.

Ok, back at it :)

I don't know if the 705's are speed rated (I presume all tires are, but to what speed I don't know). We'll see how they perform. For the money, I'm happy to swap them out sooner than later. Cheaper than most pairs of shoes these days.

Got the BS tank (Bridgestone) from Rich, and with minor mods my good friend Paul Dutra over at Back Alley Moto in Toronto helped make it fit like a glove.

Wow Tim, you were right. That tank fits around the filler cap perfectly! I can't remember: did you say the chrome will need re-done?

Re: Tim's SR500 - Aug 14 2011 - headlight - super cool find.

Tank looks awesome on there. I smell progress.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Aug 14 2011 - headlight - super cool find.

We'll see what the tank looks like once it's welded closed (you can see where Paul cut a section away so the tunnel could be widened - nice trick.

Depending on things the tank may just be left as-is. Otherwise perhaps some paint. I have one bike already with a shiny tank ;)

Paul's also doing up some welding on the frame. Putting the loop off an XS650 frame on the back end. I had already cleaned the frame of most tabs etc. Wheels are good to go, so hopefully will start mocking it up soon.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Oct 14 2011 - tank updates - almost 1 year into the build ;)

looking good Tim. Some of the 705's are speed rated to over 100mph. Turned out that my problem was that the tire was not mounted properly.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Oct 14 2011 - tank updates - almost 1 year into the build ;)

Tim , the speed rating for all motorcycle tires are indicated by a single "letter" at the end of the size molded onto the sidewall. All that I listed below are "up to" speeds in mph.
J=62, k=69, L=75, M=81, P=95, Q=100, R=105, S=113, T=118, U=125, H=130, V=150, W=168, ZR=over 150.
