Tim's XS project - 750cc rephased ported head titanium valve hot cam craziness

Re: Tim's XS project - March 25 2010 - IT'S DONE!!!

Haha! Tim's gonna cut up the XS! ;D Hearts are breakin' all over the world!! ;D

Can't wait to see what you do Tim!! 8)

(I'd suggest you start a new thread though! :D )

Re: Tim's XS project - March 25 2010 - IT'S DONE!!!

Well, I just took a bunch of stuff off the 650 :) JK - not taking it apart yet.:

Took the tank off so I could re-torque the head
Snapped one of the oil line bolts on the head (but got it out so no damage done ;) - just gotta go to the DTT garage to pick up a spare)
Re-jetted the carbs with new jets I picked up yesterday
Put new plugs in - the XS650 needs projecting plugs - BPR7ES, not just BR7ES. I was running with BR's, so this should improve running.

So I just gotta get the oil bolt from one of my spare engines downtown this afternoon and put the tank back on, and see how the carbs behave.

Looking at the 650 frame, I'm still on the fence. These bobs all have rear shocks (I don't want to go to a hard tail) but also have the seat rails modified a bit. I think it might work - longer swingarm, short shrouded shocks, girder front end, straight pipes....

Re: Tim's XS project - March 25 2010 - IT'S DONE!!!

You're a wild man, Tim!! ;) :D :D

To a lesser degree, I did the same with my H2. It was just the way I wanted it, and then, BAM!! Another inspiration took it in another direction! ???

Good luck!! 8)

Re: Tim's XS project - March 25 2010 - IT'S DONE!!!

did i hear right you're thinking about bobbing the xs you just finished ?,1 ride in,
you must be taking your retard pills with well water or something,

Re: Tim's XS project - March 25 2010 - IT'S DONE!!!

You gotta read the full plan to understand my madness...

Get the SR500 up and running, and then over the span of a few days port over the 650's tank, seat, etc. to make the SR500 my Manx-look-alike cafe racer.

Then bob the XS650. Put on a longer swingarm, shrouded shocks, girder front end, peanut tank, 21" front wheel, 16" rear, solo leather seat, blah blah blah.

Maybe - maybe not. Either way the SR500 has to get up and running.

Re: Tim's XS project - March 25 2010 - IT'S DONE!!!

Well now. Congratulations Tim! It certainly is a beauty. Now hurry up and take some pretty pics for a show-n-shine thread before you dismember her! I guess I've always thought that this would be your end-all-be-all cafe racer, but I really dig that you're doin up the SR. And happy late 40th.

What's that smell??? It.. smells.. like.. maybe BOTM! Of course that's assuming you can not take it apart before it can get nominated! :p

Re: Tim's XS project - March 25 2010 - IT'S DONE!!!

Well I'm into the bike at the moment, as I snapped one of the oil line bolts in the head this morning. Got it out no problem - just need to get a spare from the garage downtown. Also realized I didn't have the copper washers on the oil line banjo bolts ;) which would help explain some of the oil leaks. Head had loosened up too over the last couple of years since I rebuilt the engine.

So just waitin on the wife to return with the cage so I can go get that bolt, slap the tank back on and see how it runs with the new pilots and mains. Trying 27.5 pilots and 200 mains. The Boyer runs VERY hot, and you need a richer mixture for it.

Leaving the Dice Thursday night, my header was literally glowing red up near the head. Only for a few seconds though, as I turned down the air mixture to richen things up and get it running cooler.

Re: Tim's XS project - March 25 2010 - IT'S DONE!!!

Amazing work Tim, truly a work of art...I wasn't really sure it would ever get done, and it kinda seems like I was right :p ;D I love the late 60's-70's bobber look so I'm excited for the next incarnation.

Re: Tim's XS project - March 25 2010 - IT'S DONE!!!

So I took the bike out for a decent little run up and down Lakeshore Blvd this afternoon, with 25 pilots / 180 mains. Running pretty solid and idling nicely. I'm going to jump to 190 mains as I'm getting a bit of a flat spot going past 1/2 throttle.

Re: Tim's XS project - March 25 2010 - IT'S DONE!!!

Turns out I'm not taking the beast apart. Took a good look at my SR today and the tank won't fit properly. The SR has an oil-in-frame design, and while the tunnel would probably fit the SR frame, the SR has an oil filler a few inches down from the steering stem, which would force the tank to sit too far down on the frame. Would look el-stupido.

So, the SR is going to get what I originally planned - street tracker / wrenchmonkee treatment.

The only think I think I'd change on that SR would be to dig up a second front rim and run it out back but I'm on a kick for that kinda thing lately. Glad the XS will survive!

Re: Tim's XS project - March 25 2010 - IT'S DONE!!!

Took the bike up to Forks of the Credit today - great riding and the bike ran perfect. Scraped the pipes a bit in some turns - need to replace the exhaust with something more upswept for more ground clearance.
