Re: My XS650 project - update March 23 - ROLLING CHASSIS!

Do you realize that you have 16 pages of torment so far !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

Re: My XS650 project - update March 23 - ROLLING CHASSIS!

16 pages and a year coming up. Might be another 16 pages and 12 months before I ride it!

Re: My XS650 project - update March 23 - ROLLING CHASSIS!

You should use the cut out in the front of the seat for the key switch, a small box , to match the cut out, mounted to the frame with little flip up lid.

My nemesis. Pretty sure its a conspiracy by those jealous folks in the middle of our country.

Re: My XS650 project - update March 23 - ROLLING CHASSIS!

I'd forgotten how skinny this thing is. I went from my middle of the road CB550F to the wideload BMW R75 and now to this. Feels like sitting on a bicycle.

That's right, like a proper cafe should be. You get a cookie for your efforts Tim, nice!

Tim, that grin tells it all, can't wait to see the completion. We will need a widescreen for that shot. ;D

Re: My XS650 project - update March 23 - ROLLING CHASSIS!

Well, as I progress I'll have to do up some video and get it up on YouTube :) Then I'll have to decide what to do next, 'cause with the BMW and the 650, there's no room/money for another project. Will have to enjoy this one for a while I guess and then maybe move on.

Sounds like you need a bigger garage...

Re: My XS650 project - update March 23 - ROLLING CHASSIS!

Looks great so far. It will probably come together a little faster now for you now that it's a roller.

I can't wait for the day My Pro-street 883 has the engine mounted, rear wheel and drive line set-up and is a roller. From there its just welding small tabs/mounts and bolting on the other components.

I hear you on having too many bikes! As soon as my chopper is done I plan to ride it until it finds a new home.

I'd love to keep it,but can't afford a sportbike AND cruiser at this time in my life. I'm not ready to give up sport riding so the 883 will have to go to a new home I fear. I have my wifes Ninja 250,but it's not the same. I REALLY miss the power of my old FZR1000 and want a more modern rendition of it.

Re: My XS650 project - update March 23 - ROLLING CHASSIS!

That bike is insane. Well done. What's up with the time frame, though? You should have that done by summer, no?

Re: My XS650 project - update March 23 - ROLLING CHASSIS!

I'm slow - no doubt. Lots of other things occupying my time and no space to work on the bike. Up till Sunday the frame was in the dining room, wheels etc. in my basement (finished), engine out in the garage, tank and seat in a closet.

I could've done this work months ago, but it was too damn cold out to bother with. Now that I can spend some time in the garage, it was time to get the bike on wheels and parked so I can wheel it out and work on it.

Should be done by summer - with some concerted effort. Aside from bolting things on, the following need to be sorted out:

-Rear wheel spacing is off - wheel is not centered in the swingarm oddly enough. Might need custom spacers made.
-Front wheel spacing - needs spacers made up
-Dust caps on swingarm bushings - even though these are new from Mikesxs, they're too small for the bronze bushings
-Electrical - entire bike needs to be wired up custom front to back - not using stock wiring harness at all. Need controls for the starter/kill on the right bar and signals/horn on the left bar.
-Lighting - need to sort out brake/signal lights and locations. Headlight is sorted out.

Then just need to tune the 36mm Mikuni roundslide carbs/Boyer ignition.

Oh and it will then need to be safetied, which should prove interesting ;) The serial number is barely visible through the powdercoating.

Is the wheel centered in the frame and in line with the front wheel? Some swingarms are not that same from side to side, and centering the wheel to the swingarm will actually throw the wheel out of line with the bike's centerline.

Re: My XS650 project - update March 23 - ROLLING CHASSIS!

I'll have to check it out of course, but it seems off to me. Seems odd as it's a perfect fit with the correct spacers on the right sides of the wheel, just off-centre. Not a big deal - am going to try the wheel in a later model swingarm to check it too. Of course the chain alignment will tell the real story, as there is no adjusting the engine position. If the chain is lined up, then the wheel is in the right spot.

Re: My XS650 project - update March 23 - ROLLING CHASSIS!

Off center wheels may not necessarily be a spacer issue. The wheel may need to be dished, one side of the spokes tightened more to pull the rim towards one side. My CB350 front wheel need some dishing to get it centered.

Re: My XS650 project - update March 23 - ROLLING CHASSIS!

Wouldn't that be a kick in the pants :) I'll have to check in with some XS650 experts. Is this something that can be done relatively easily if it is indeed the case? If I had to guess, I'd say it's about 1/4 inch off to the right - needs to come over to the left.
