Whats to do and see in the area? I'll be around for most of Febuary. I'm going to a Super Cross race but otherwise... Havnt a clue, never been there before.

Visit the Star of India and if you have time, the RMS Queen Mary.

the belly up tavern in Del Mar.....the gas lamp district downtown.....the boardwalk in pacific beach/mission beach....balboa park and the zoo

Star of India is a museum ship, iron windjammer, at the San Diego Maritime Museum. Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs did an episode on it. If you like sailing ships it is, IMHO, a must see. The RMS Queen Mary is in Long Beach, also a museum ship and the last of the WW II Cunard Queens. There were restaurants on board. Worth a look if you are into ocean liners.

TJ? Eugh. A gajillion shops selling the same shit and a bunch of sausagefest bars? Make it to Ensenada or Rosarito if you must do the college-and-military-partying-in-Mexico scene...

Ocean Beach is my favorite place to hang out. Used to live there; little on the scuzzy side and high on the hipster/white trash factor but a lot of fun. Great food on Newport Ave...Hodad's is an amazing burger, and Ortega's is (was, anyhow) the best Mexican in the city as far as I'm concerned. Tamales are amazing, as are the baja fish tacos and the carnitas and everything they make. Tons of trashy bars on Newport, Pacific Shores being the trashiest-localiest. There's a biker bar of sorts there, too. South Beach is the college-iest of the bars there. Walk up to "Sunset Cliffs" for an awesome, well, sunset, watching the waves and the surfers and just taking it all in.

Mission beach has a similar vibe but a slightly different character.

Old Town is touristy and worn-out IMHO.

North Park has a couple of cool places...The Chicken Pie Shop (El Cajon ave and Oregon, IIRC) is a favorite funky old place if you have only a little to spend but a lot of hunger.

Hillcrest is the gay district, inland and totally neat and clean and the best restaurants around...if Bombay is still there it's worth a shot if you like Indian food, although the founder seems to have moved to India and I can't vouch for their current level of awesome.

Pacific Beach is the college-y bar-crawl area, Ingram St. Gaslamp and Little Italy downtown have their charms as well, especially if you're looking for nightlife.

Balboa Park is a really nice place to hang out, with some great museums. (edit: Including an automotive museum, to stay on forum topic...I recall a bunch of bikes last time I was there. Aerospace museum, too.) And the zoo actually is great if you're into that sort of thing. Cabrillo Nat'l monument is a great place to walk and enjoy the natural side of things. Torrey Pines and La Jolla Cove are nice seaside areas. You can sea kayak, surf, scuba dive, whatever...

If you've got a motorcycle (or a convertible Sebring rental car like everyone else?), I'd imagine you want to head out on Highway 8 past Alpine to the back roads around Cuyamaca Peak and Noble Canyon etc. in the Laguna mountains. (Awesome BBQ place in Alpine, too, used to hit it at the end of many mountain bike rides out that way. Hit up the town of Julian for apple pie.

North County San Deigo and Orange County have things to see, too, as does LA if you're willing to go that far.

I live in the Gaslamp Quarter and if you're looking for anything decent to do check it out, you can walk anywhere and there is food and drinks to suit all tastes. If you're up for a walk you can see little Italy and the bay, its worth a look. My favorite is the historic del mar hotel or Coronado island. Then there's always sea world or the zoo in balboa park.

I am military, but we were explicitly told not to go to Mexico...

I'll actually be in Miramar and wont have a bike or car per say, we will have some vans to share.
