Too much fog.....

New2meCB

Been Around the Block
Rode home this morning at 4:30 and the fog was so thick I had to pull over to remove my glasses. Initially I lifted my visor thinking that would suffice but it didn't take long before my glasses filled with large droplets as well.

Couldn't see shit! ::) Pic doesn't do the fog justice.

Soaked by the time I got home.

Too much fog?

I feel your pain, I ride a lot in fog and it can get pretty bad. Even worse, like you said, when you wear glasses as both the helmet shield and glasses get covered. My worry is getting rear ended by a car behind me. Last year I encountered the worst ever. I was on the highway and I could see no more than a few feet in front of me. I couldn't slow down since I'm sure a car would have slammed into me, terrifying experience, going at a good clip and not being able to see in front or behind you and helmet shield totally useless.

Made for a nice picture though, nice shot.

Look into a pinlock visor for your helmets fellas. They really do make a huge difference. No more fogging up. Ever.

Good remnder though - its that time of year when watching for wet leaves - and watching your six with the bike still in gear is paramount.

Absolutely, I just had this talk with my son the other day. Also, Rain-ex helps the water from building up on your shield. We also get fog so thick here, it's scary. I've had to ride to work with nothing more than the white line on the side of the road to follow. I leave before sun up, and along with you guys, my biggest fear is being rear ended...

It won't prevent a rear end, but it's seriously great technology. Visibility is no longer a problem.

Heads up - RainX will deteriorate a polycarbonate shield. I'm using it right now as well because I have a cheapie helmet for which a pinlock shield isn't available, and don't intend to use this helmet next year. If you're in the same boat, you can polish the inside of the helmet with chapstick, and it keeps the fogging down.

Its not that the helmet shield fogs up (not mine anyway), its just that the fog builds up on it in such a different way than rain. It doesn't wisk off like rain does even if you turn your head, it just clings on and you have to be constantly wiping it off with your hand which is not good when you are on the highway and can't see anything in front of you. My fear was hitting a moose which is a big issue where I live.

Yeah, my visor and glasses weren't really "fogging" up, it was more like riding through rain. No new tech would have helped I suspect. It just builds up so quickly that the droplets are huge in seconds. It was quite thick. It was such saturated stuff that I wasn't sure how it wasn't rain.

I don't know. We get fog often here but it's pretty rare to be that thick.

I stayed off the highway and, as Rich mentioned, in gear the entire time.

I'm trying to get hold of some "Never Wet", I don't know if it will work on a visor, but looks like cools stuff... http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=never+wet&FORM=VIRE3#view=detail&mid=CE07ABDF464896CA0399CE07ABDF464896CA0399

I wax my faceshields after (nearly) every ride, when I'm cleaning the helmet. RainX works well too.
A quick left-right-left-right "shake" of the helmet clears the faceshield.

Im not out to one up at all, in the mt of western maryland where i live fog gets real bad at times. i dont dare go out in it on a bike.ive made 3am trips to the market to get " bring a childs fever down now meds", and the 7 mile round trip could have ended my life. Its not my judgememt im worried about. the full of cheap trucker speed guy in the 18 wheeler that gives me second thoughts. If im gonna be out in fog nissan is always better than yamaha.

It leaves a frosted finish I don think that's going to be good. It will be foggy on a sunny clear day, lol.

+1 on the pinlocks for INSIDE the shield fogging
way back when doing enduros, hare scrambles etc, had severe problems with fogging up my eyglasses inside the goggles, switched to smith turbo-fan goggles to solve that ishoe
