Trading help for knowledge

Goodfella

Been Around the Block
After weeks of research and my obsessive nature, I have decided to take action. I am only 16 and living in the Troy/Birmingham area and have recently been obsessing over vintage bikes and cafe's. Around here there are not many kids who even know how to turn a wrench and its suffocating me. I NEED to work on something and I wanted to know if there is anyone in the area who is working on a bike and would like to trade my help for your knowledge. My goal for the near future is to buy my own bike and transform it into the bike in my dreams, but my parents are not too keen with the idea of letting me just dive in. If I could have it my way I would have an old barn bike and its manual sitting in my garage right now ready to be torn down. But that is not the case :p. Don’t be shy. PM me or reply. Sorry im new to forums.

That's a pretty cool idea you have......good on ya.

Welcome to the site man! I can't help much at all, but if your parents aren't keen on the idea, I would suggest getting an old beat up bike (preferably small cc's and dirt cheap) of your own. The vast majority of people here tend to work by themselves, but there isn't a problem that can't be resolved via the internet.

Hope you do find somebody close by to spin a wrench with, but having a project of your own is ideal.

Well you see that’s half of the problem. I don’t have the money right now to buy a bike. I will in the near future when I start working again, (broken collar bone due to wrestling) but I want to have a cushion when the bike goes over budget...seems like that happens to everyone. So what I’m trying to get at is that I would like to use my time wisely and get a jumpstart on my bike smarts. If it means just watching, so be it.

thanks for the welcome :)

good news everyone! (if anyone cares) My parents agreed to let me get a bike. Im thinking cb500f or something like that. Once i get it ill make a build thread with lots of pics ;D I still have to save some money for parts though.

Re: Trading help for knowledge

Thats good news! Start scouring craigslist and neighbors garages for possible projects! Whatever it is you end up with, somebody on here will be able to offer advice...theres a bit of everything going on here. Good luck and enjoy the ride!

How much of a project are you looking for?

And how much are you looking to spend?

I'll keep my eye open for any bikes for sale in the area.
