Trailer Question...

Hey DTT peeps! Im batting around trailer ideas, and thought a military M101A1, A2, or A3 would be a neat trailer to move bikes around with. Is anyone else using one of these and can shed any light? I dont know if maybe its too high, not wide enough...etc etc.
I would love to hear from someone who uses or has used one of these. Thanks!

Too be honest, any trailer will work. I've been trailering bike in tiny little home job thing all over southern Ontario. If it's got sides on it, you can always shove the front tire into the corner, then three ratchet straps, boom ready to go.

Those ole school trailers are cool looking though, plus they are made for weight, and those tires are going to over pretty much and land to drag bikes out of the worse brush. ;)

I bought one of those super cheapo Harbor Frieght assemble it yourself trailers. Welded a few bits of angle on to make it fit the Norton. It made two 1600 mile trips to Bonneville and a dozen or so trips to El Mirage without problems. The trailer above looks pretty meaty.

Thanks, Tim :). To the op: that trailer looks really stout. I have a jetski trailer that I converted to haul a bike here and there. I put an electric winch on the front with a wireless remote. It makes it a breeze to load a bike by myself. Especially a heavy one. I do kind of wish my trailer had a lower cog but it works

The only downside I can see with one of those is weight. If you don't mind towing a few extra lbs. go for it. You sure won't overload it at the swap-meet. 8)

I've borrowed a ratty old trailer similar to hoof's to carry a motorcycle, and it worked just fine. I'd say the trailers you're looking at are a bit overkill... but if you're going for style points, knock yourself out.

Ive always been into the Military trailer thing. I thought about buying one and converting it into a camper. So its always been in the back of my mind. Since the fenderwells intrude into the bed slightly, i could probably only carry 2 bikes. But when i get to the track, snap the canvas roof on, air up the air mattress and then i have a place to sleep. It may be slightly overkill, but from what ive read, these things track beautifully behind almost any vehicle. I have an 07 FJ Cruiser with a 5000 lb towing capacity to im not overly concerned with weight.

That being said, i emailed a fella last nite about one...he's about 45 mins away. So we will see what happens.

Although, the same scenario could be done with just about any utility trailer. I'm not trying to talk you out of it or anything. Hell, I'm a huge fan of "over engineering". But keep in mind, those trailers are sprung to carry much heavier loads than a couple of vintage bikes. Add to that the bouncy nature of single axle trailers, and I think your cargo will likely get jolted around alot. Just something to think about ;)
