trouble kickstarting after repair.

I have installed a new piston and camshaft to my 1981 Honda CB250rs and now I'm having trouble kickstarting the engine. THe kickstarter lever makes it way down but sometimes gets stopped and wont swing all the way through. I have checked the timing and it all seems to be in place. Anyone have any suggestions where to start?

Are there any marks on the end of the spark plug like it's hitting the piston? You might have the wrong spark plug in there?

If that's OK then kick it harder......

Are you sure it's not 3/4" reach and stock was 1/2"? Just asking. One would be a BHxS and the other a BExS or something like that where 'x' is a number, probably 8.

I would guess a valve is striking the plug. Been there, done that. :-(

If I remove the spark plug and kick it over then refit the spark plug it kicks through fine for several strokes then starts clogging up again

I put new fuel through the system, it kicked off and lasted for a few seconds before it died out. Tried re kick starting and it backfired out the pod filter.

Re checked all timing, can get the bike to start now but it blows heaps of white smoke and shortly dies out

White smoke is oil - maybe the carb has overflowed and dumped gas in your sump?

That would explain the occasional hard kick over (hydro lock).

Check your oil - if the level is over-full and smells like gas.....you need to clean your carb.

I just put a 2 into one exhaust and pod filter on it also, could it be due to running lean?

Some white smoke on startup is expected. If its blowing lots of smoke you fucked up the installation.
