UK Based Cafe Racer Builder

I'm interested in getting a Honda 350 Cafe, with a similar look to the gorgeous "limited edition" version as seen in the website header.

Can anyone recommend a UK builder? I've found several in the UK and a couple in Europe but struggling to find anyone in the UK.

I cant really recommend any specific builders as I do all my own work but below are few I like.

There a couple that appear to concentrate on Bmw Airheads

I trust you have deep pockets, to get a build of that quality and detail done would put a big hole in £15k. There has to £3-4k of parts and paint then the cost of the donor bike. God knows how many hours have gone into it but at shop rates you'll soon hit £10k.
I presume you have read the build thread

There are plenty about that do the Harley custom thing, but cafe racers are essentially a garage built motorcycle and people build them for them selves, so the hours of work involved are not costed as its a labour of love. Which is why there are not many pro builders out there as its difficult to find customers willing to spend that much on a 35 year old bike. Not with standing that the resale price probably halves as soon as you wheel it out of the shop.

The majority of builders aren't generally inspirational they don't perform magic and has been said the satisfaction you get from building your own is great that first fuel on ignition on, the first swing of the kickstart clutch in then wallop clutch out and something that first lived 30 odd years ago springing into life after you have done it priceless. Find somewhere to learn make friends seek advice and help, spend your cash on tools and build it yourself. Seriously learning is half the fun

As Baldyboy says, half the fun is in the building. Don't be afraid to give it a go and no one on this site is going to mock you for asking questions - we all started somewhere.

I'd seriously endorse what's already been said. 8)

Get a simple bike [ single / twin ] and something which is a popular donor so you can check other builds.

As long as you can operate spanners and screwdrivers without causing yourself harm, you will be able to easily pull the bike down to the point you can respray, detail and fit alternate parts.

Take loads of pix while dismantling - especially wiring / plumbing runs and connections and with the relevant workshop manual you'll get the job done.

Quite a very few of us do no more than pull off standard parts and replace with aftermarket / alternate model pieces or parts that we have made. Certainly that's where I started when I was 13 with my woods bike. Yes, the frame and parts are painted and detailed and that's where some of the individuality comes in, but in the main we don't have the skills or maybe facilities to undertake a ground up build.

Just take a look at the thousands of CB750 Honda that have been Cafe'd or Flat Tracked - there's only so much you can do to make them different. That's not a dig at CB750s BTW, just to illustrate a point.

You can buy off the shelf the parts you need to convert to Cafe Racer or FT - even trawling E-Bay will find you alternative tanks, seats, etc. But for a first build, the parts are there - and you WILL gain far more satisfaction from building it yourself. ;D

Put your flippers on and dive in Bud.
What can possibly go wrong ::)

What part of the UK are you in? perhaps one of us can be available to assist if needed, if only to kick things off.

Good luck,
Dave.

At the end of the day, if you don't personally have the facilities, yours is a supervisory role to a large degree. ie. finding painters, platers, wheel builders polishers and parts suppliers etc.
Once you have tracked down the resources and designed your bike, set to, ordering the parts you want, and stripping the bike. You'll need a decent socket set, a disc cutter and some flap wheels. Seems daunting at first, but take a bravery pill and get stuck in, cutting off all the old lugs and brackets you don't need, and smoothing the cut areas down with the flap wheels.
Remeber to have any new mountings welded on before you take the frame to the powder coaters, as forgetting something is a pain. Prepare items for plating well, as in my experience, the prep has a bearing on the end result. Find your local automotive style hardware store, and replace all the small fasteners for stainless allens and button heads. This wont cost bundles, and the attention to detail is worth the effort.
Work to your plan, know what you are doing, and grin, as your freshly painted, polished and plated bits come back and your new bike gradually grows as you reassemble it.
