Utility trailer rebuild

Coast to Coast
Well I posted about this in the what did you build today thread, but I'll start this to keep up with changes on it. It was picked up with title off offerup for $200.

First I had to fix the tongue. It had 2 pieces of round tube welded on with the coupler spot welded onto those. Fixed that with some 3" box tube .125 wall. Since I bought a 10ft piece of the tube I added diagonal braces as well.

Second it got a new axle. The new axle is a dexter 4" drop with 3500lb capacity. Southwest wheel has a more than fair price even shipped. You get to specify width and lug pattern, you'll need some welding ability as the spring brackets aren't attached. New axle was $260 shipped, and showed up in less than a week. Here's a link to southwestwheel incase anyone else is axle shopping. https://www.southwestwheel.com/c-1249-3500-lbs-4-drop-dexter-trailer-axles.aspx

unfortunately due to time I wasn't able to blast and paint the frame the way I wanted. So fenders got attached to the removable sides for now, I added a pair of bearing buddies and loaded it up. 2 xs650s and a triumph tiger 800 on the trailer and it hit the road. 35hrs and 2000 miles later it went from washington to oklahoma with no issues.

For the future it needs better springs, sandblasted, painted, and better attached fenders. But it towed great and easily handled the 75-80mph I cruised most of the trip.

Man that original tongue is sketch as hell. I don't know if I would have felt comfortable pulling it home empty!

Looks good now, looks like you could have just built from scratch at this point lol

Not quite. I would have spent more than $200 on steel, getting it weighed, dealing with a state patrol inspection, and paid more for a tag. Lots of reasons to start with a kinda janky but titled trailer, atleast in washington.

Agreed. After building my single rail trailer from scratch, I would've been much cheaper to just buy a complete trailer. I bought some steel for it, but much of the other I had laying around.

Yeah. I was actually looking at getting a harborfreight trailer to modify till I found this 5x10 for less. Mainly for the ease of getting a title. I have about $500 in it right now, $600 if you count removable wheel chocks and tie down points. So by the time I add new springs, blast it and paint I'll still be under $1k for a trailer set up how I need it. I might have been able to get something for less, but this is set up for my needs and even a new trailer would have needed some work.

You do know that Harbor Freight trailers come with manufacture's certificate of origin? Luckily for me though, Tennessee does not require title or license on small trailers.

Yep, that is why I would have gotten one if I hadn't found this one. Take the receipt and MSO to the tag agency and walk out with a plate. Either way the trailer I picked up, or the HF trailer, there would have been work and mods to get it where I wanted.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to leaving WA. Down in OK where I'm moving a personal use trailer doesn't need to be registered. But you can get a permanent plate for it for a 1 time $15 fee. Helps not get hassled if you travel out of state.

Ohio was really easy on my home built. Noone ever looked at it. I went and got a weight slip. Took said slip to the license bureau. Told them the serial number (which i made/ welded into the tongue) and they gave me a tag.

It is easy peasy if the trailer is under 4000 lbs.

Unfortunately, it makes it easy for people to steal trailers and then just put them in their name. Its not a common problem, but it has happened. Someone could literally steal my trailer, weigh it and tag it, and it would be their word against mine who the true owner was.

In tn you don't even have to tag the thing. No title, no registration, no license plate, no nothing.
