V4 powered Race rep! ...it's alive!!!!! With idling issues that is

Re: V4 powered Race rep! ...... A plan of attack desperately needed!

I can't remember what I had for dinner and you want me to recall what I said at some undetermined time in the past? WTF. I don't remember the context so maybe you can remind me. I have used GSXR750 rubber mounts which have a 6mm stud on one side and 6mm hole in the other side.

I often use a simple rubber grommet with a steel sleeve such as those used on an RZ350 or FZR400. That's what I use on many race fairings. Lockhart Phillips sells this http://www.lockhartphillipsusa.com/BODY-BUSHING-KIT/

Is any of that helping?

Re: V4 powered Race rep! ...... A plan of attack desperately needed!

Ya ya, I know. So demanding. ;-) But once again you come through. Those fairing grommets are exactly what I was recalling. Those look like they have a vinyl bushing? Doesn't matter, just curious. I'm guessing that you would then just thread through the fastener of your choice?

Re: V4 powered Race rep! ...... A plan of attack desperately needed!

Correct. The nylon (?) tube spacer allows the fastener to be tight enough without crushing the rubber grommet. Use a large washer on the outside or large headed fasteners

http://www.lockhartphillipsusa.com/ALUMINUM-BODY-KIT/

or http://www.probolt-usa.com/aluminium/aluminium-bolts-dome-head/alloy-dome-head-bolt-m6-x-1-00mm-x-10mm-pk-x-10-black.html#.UO2mMKypL48

Or if you are feeling rich and want everyone to know it go with Titanium 1/4 turn fasteners (can't use grommets though)
http://www.probolt-usa.com/titanium/titanium-quick-release/titanium-d-ring-quick-release-stud-17mm-pack-x-10-purple-haze.html#.UO2mvKypL48

I like the weight savings of Aluminum fasteners, but they are not very durable and wear out fast. For my bikes that's a fair trade off. Try these as a cheap way in. http://www.lockhartphillipsusa.com/ALUMINUM-BOLT-KIT/
Perfect for engine side covers, fairings and other low stress components. Do not use anywhere that strength is important. For that, use Titanium.

To put Ti into perspective, a full set of Ti fasteners for a bike will cost $2-3k and save about the same amount as taking a dump before you ride. ::)

Re: V4 powered Race rep! ...... A plan of attack desperately needed!

Yikes! 2-3 k ? That is steep! Speaking of steep.... Cost of shipping of a hammer fairing from airtech........225 bucks! cost of shipping to montana is 75 bucks! So over three times the cost, for just taking it a couple hours over the border. And that doesn't include duty. Looks like my brothers inlaws will be receiving a package.

Re: V4 powered Race rep! ...... guages are here!

So this arrived in the mail!

KosoRx-1n_zpsc89f73bc.jpg

The brackets that come with it aren't going to work but that shouldn't be too tough. One question I have is that the sensor wires, water and oil temp for starters, don't match what are installed on the bike already. Any ideas on availablility of adapters?

V4 powered Race rep! ...... Gauge has arrived!!!

Well, I was all ready to tear into this thing over the weekend. Put a new agm battery in to replace dead one, but even though it was running in the fall, now I seem to have nothing for spark. So I was hoping to trace it this weekend. I say hoping because I had a little mishap yesterday.

I took out the old 12 gauge to take care of a couple coyotes that were pretty close to the yard. Had the first one lined up and BOOM! I knew right away something was off as the kick and sound was insane. I had a touque on, like any good Canadian farm boy, and felt something glance off the side of my head. My ripped glove then caught my eye as well as well as a heck of a lot of blood comjng out of it.

Didn't feel a thing with the adrenaline but what happened was the barrel basically blew up, the right side curling completely back and the left half actually tearing away and shooting back at me, taking a three and a half inch gash down to the bone on my left hand cutting through a tendon. It also must have been what glanced of the side of my head. Forgot to take pictures of my hand before the doc closed it up but I'll throw a pic of the gun up here today. About fifty stitches did the trick.

I had checked the barrel for anything as we still have snow here and it looked clean before I took it out. Must have been something further down maybe. My uncle had the same thing happen, years ago except he was shooting cheap shells and the wad never cleared the barrel, so on his second shot, kaboom.

Regardless, just happy it wasn't any worse as it easily could have been. Just might have to wrangle my brother-in-laws into helping me get this thing roadworthy. Can't ride it for six to eight weeks now anyways!

Re: V4 powered Race rep! ...... A bump in the road.

Blame the Coyotes, all kidding aside you're lucky in that unlucky sort of way.
Post the gun pictures!
Cheers, 50gary

Re: V4 powered Race rep! ...... A bump in the road.

I'm glad that you're still alive to build this bike! All joking aside, glad you are okay

Re: V4 powered Race rep! ...... A bump in the road.

Damn, blown up guns are not fun. Glad to hear you made it out in fairly good condition. Was it an older shotgun with newer ammo? Those old barrels weren't made for the amounts of pressure in new loads. At any rate, glad you're ok.

It was an older 870 pump but it was just 2 3/4 4 shot and it wasn't high brass either. Should have a picture up this afternoon.

Re: V4 powered Race rep! ...... A bump in the road.

Wow! Ouch!

Now did the coyote happen to look like a blue bunny that talked and says things like "Whats up Doc?" and did he happen to stick his finger in the end of the rifle before you fired it?! ;D

Ha, I've only seen guns look like that in cartoons. Glad your ok

V4 powered Race rep! ...... A bump in the road.

Certainly looks like something wielded by the ever foiled Mr. Fudd doesn't it. Alas, it is but a few stitches, but I'm having trouble doing much. Hoping to pick my wheels up tomorrow as my brother-in-law was going to paint them but we decided against it. Looks like I'm going to just roll with them as is, and then convert over to cbr 600 f2 wheels once I can find some for crazy cheap. Any takers?

I'm also wondering about the style of the seat that came with it, if I can repurpose it by extending the actual seat pan area so it is longer and fits me better. Also, possibly fill in the back which is a large, square tail light and change it to something more round to match the endurance style front I have planned. Or should I stick with the big square guy so it keeps its 80's roots. Advise on glassing fixes for this?

Naked, as the bike sits now, the seat looks way too big IMHO. And really dwarfs the bottom half, in particular, the wheels. But with a half fairing, or even full, would it balance out? Opinions and dialogue please! Need something to dissect while this bloody hand heals!

Re: V4 powered Race rep! ...... A bump in the road.

i remember going to laguna seca in 85 and just getting goosebumps at the sound the factory hondas made.still would love to have one.had a chance at a 500 but parts for the little ones are hard to come by so i passed it up,maybe someday.excited to see yours come together

Re: V4 powered Race rep! ...... A bump in the road.

You are correct, that seat is a little bit big hair 1980's and needs a serious re-style to make it work. The seat part could be longer and the sides cut down drastically. That would lighten the rear end look a lot. If you were as serious as a heart attack, you could remove the lower subframe arms and relocated them up high and tight and that would help to open up the area between wheel and seat.

That would make the rear look more purposeful and would focus attention on the central part which is the engine.

Yep. Good call. It doesn't need to be all 2013 Moto GP tiny and perched in the air, but you could take it part way there I think.

V4 powered Race rep! ...... A bump in the road.

I was going to put the new sprockets and chain on tonight and get her back on her own two feet. But I didn't like how dirty the wheels still looked so I decided to give them some attention. Seemed to be a lot of chain wax on the one side of the rear. Pain in the neck to remove, but got them looking a bit better. Going to clean all the bolts before I put everything back together.

Oh and thanks for the feedback teazer. Glad to get some reinforcement on that train of thought. Here's the front wheel by the way.

Whoever the designer was that came up with that spiral hub deserves death by paper cut.

The koso speedo I have uses a magnetic sensor. Any way of removing the mechanical one and replacing it with a seal? Or should I just leave it in case I switch to cbr wheels down the road?

V4 powered Race rep! ...... A bump in the road.

It's amazing what a sick wife, teething 6mo old and cows calving can do to any wrenching. Add to that a truck giving me electrical problems and I haven't even been able to get the wheels and new chain back on. Oh and 6-10 inches of snow today! What the heck winter!
If we didn't have a family farm, we would be setting sails for greener pastures. Big island of HI, here we come. Sorry for the rant, just fed up with having snow since October.

Re: V4 powered Race rep! ...... A bump in the road.

Been raining over here in Australia since November. I know the pain. I have just finished my bike and can't go for a ride because of all the water.
