Weak spark at one of the points.

Detroit Hustles Harder
Alright fellas, here is the deal. I have a 74 360. Brand new rebuild. Timing was set, points and condenser replaced and set, and dyna coils. The bike currently runs but mostly on the right cylinder. Trouble is, no matter how I set the points I end up getting a huge FAT blue spark on the right cylinder and barely nothing and inconsistent spark on the left side. I sanded and re-gapped them. I've contact cleaned them. All wires are in tact and connections are good. What could possibly be the trouble with the left side points??

Have you checked your coils and all the wiring leading to and from the coils? Have you checked to make sure you haven't accidentally grounded the one set of contact points?

That's where I would start...

And...this is an important question...did the bike run well on the right cylinder before you tuned it up?

The left point is probably grounding out on the points cover. Run it with the points cover off and see if that resolves the problem

Tonup... this is the first time the bike has actually run since I bought it and did a full cafe build. I have a thread on here called spitfire.

I have been running without the points cover. Mostly so I can see how terrible the spark is on the left cylinder. I just changed the left point. It seemed to have good spark before I put everything back together so I think I have a broken wire from the points to the condenser/coil connection. I am going to re-wire it tomorrow and see if that makes a difference. It has to be a grounding issue.

A very common mistake (that I make reliably) is that sometimes people accidentally ground the moveable arm on the breaker points when they reinstall the wires back onto the points when installing new points. If you're actually seeing a large spark at the points themselves, that would make me want to check my condensers, which you replaced, right?..I can't see what you posted previously when typing this.

And...have you statically timed your ignition? I'm wondering if your main points plate is correct and the second set of points (which is timed independently) might be off.

I'll go back and look for your Spitfire build to learn more about your project...

Re-wired the leads from the points to the harness. No avail. Same issue. Where else would it be grounding out excluding the points cover or a bad wire?

A large spark means it's a condensor problem.
There will always be some arcing but it shouldn't be anything major.
Did you use genuine Honda condensers or some aftermarket?
They are grounded properly?
If you have the originals, put them on and see what happens
If it was wiring problem and connectors were grounding, you wouldn't get any spark and coils would get reallwarm (until the magic smoke leaked out ;) )

I don't have anything constructive to say but I thought large spark was a good thing? That's what I've been comparing my mini spark to...

Spark at plug is a good thing, spark at points is a bad thing
I think I've written out all about the reverse EMF stuff, not doing it again

Is the 360 condenser truly a single condenser or is it split in the middle of the case? I have the condenser mounted to a ground but only on one side. Maybe I need to securely ground both sides to get consistency and balance between the two.

I'll try a better grounding setup on the current condenser. If that doesn't seem to fix it I'll swap back to the old condenser. At least I'm narrowing it it down!

I figured out it was a grounding issue on the condenser. I put a solid ground on it and now I have balanced spark and the bike runs well. Thanks for the help!
