Welding

Hot Rod Troy

Coast to Coast
I picked up a welder yesterday. Now I have a question for those of you who have some experience with stick welders. Can I use my stick welder to weld on the frame and light sheet metal? I haven't welded in at least twenty years. My welder is a Montgomery Wards Power Kraft 230. If that helps.

Thanks,
Troy

Stick arc welding sheetmetal is tough. Usually blow right through it. From an old car rodder, Eastwood Co makes a "stitch welder" attachment LINKY that replaces the positive cable that holds the rod and if I remember right moves it in and out of the puddle very fast. Also helps to tack it in several places before a continuous weld that helps keep it from distorting / warping the two pieces
Hope that helps

use 1/16" rods and about 20amps AC.
You can go lower amps and still get good welds, its just harder to start arc

;D,,,,,,,one more time,,,welding is just like sticking shit to the bed sheets with a putty knife...Jammers has it right at .062 for electrodes......these frames are paper thin in there day,,,even thinner oxidizing out back past the hog pen ::)...what do you want to stick to the frame??????????? :-\

I am thinking more like welding a swing arm and making it longer for my next project. It's got an all tube frame, I think. I haven't gotten that stripped down yet. I may want to add a gusset or two depending on what I do too. Most of it is still in the air.
