IMO a small wire feed mig welder would be a great starter to learn. Try to find a cheap 110v welder off craigslist or local classifieds.

Found that one today...45 min north of Detroit. Many others out there.

Thanks for the tip Stylz!

What other gear do I need to get started? The list I can think of off the top of my head looks something like:

apron
heavy gloves
mask
basic shop tools: hammers, pliers, vice, wire brushes
scrap metal

Missing anything big?

No problem.....here's the link to my build in the bobber section.

here's a bit of advice if I may. Never buy one of the cheap wire welders that keep the feed wire hot. Some cheap POS wire feeders, when you touch the wire to the work will arc. Do not buy it. Take the next step up ,when you pull the trigger the feed wire will get hot or arc. thats the style to start with. The cheapo thats hot you can buy for 199$. Do not buy it. Step up to the 299$ welders. Please, I have been welding for 40 years and really feel you will be much better off. Thanks. And if you can really afford it, i have the same SP-100 lincoln for 25 years. But they are 750$ with a bottle for shielding gas. That to is the best. Try not to use flux-core wire. Or if you do never put you're life or depend on a weld using flux-core.

@ dcwp - thats a good list of start up tools / accesories. One thing that isn't essential but fricken awesome....i have an auto dimming mask that is super easy to use. Great for starting your bead and seeing what your doing without constant on/off of your goggles. They run 150 ish and like i said, not pertinent.

@ mixmaster - great advice. i agree with your upgrade to the 300 dollar welder, just figured since dcwp was interested in minor projects and batt boxes etc. that goin cheap wouldn't be such a bad idea. Wouldn't weld a frame with a cheapo but accesories for sure. @ our shop we rock the Miller 185 wire feed mig 220v and an old school stick welder from the early 70's.
